Hello

I have been taking Folic acid (sanatogen- mother to be) now for the last 6 days and it has made me feel slightly nauseous, bloated and like I have mild heartburn.
Is this normal?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :-)

Hi I had this when I started taking mine. Are you taking in the morning? I switched mine to the evening and have been fine since x

Yes its normal.. like the other poster said you can switch it to the evening and if your getting nausea it will be overnight.

Good tip, I quite often feel nauseous after taking the pre-pregnancy supplements but hadn't actually attributed it to taking them. I just take them in the morning out of routine. So obvious, can't believe I didn't think of it!

I felt terrible taking mine (Pregnacare) and still don't feel entirely right again even after I stopped taking it. It literally felt like it gave me an ulcer (I was on it for 3 months with all those symptoms). It's usually the iron, though I think Santogen has perhaps a slightly more gentle form of iron. If taking it at night doesn't work (it didn't help me at all), try switching to just folic acid instead of a full multivitamin and just make sure you eat a healthy diet. If you do end up needing an iron supplement, I've been told that Spatone is good, though I haven't tried it yet. I'm staying away from iron altogether unless my GP advises otherwise. Hope you feel better!

Like some of the other ladies suggested try taking it in the evening. That way if you do get nauseated it will be through the night rather than during the day.

Oh, that sounds rough :( I have IBS so I experience this most days regardless of supplements, so you have my sympathy!

I can't give a properly objective comment, as I have only ever used one prenatal supplement, which is Boots Conception Support. I've been taking it for almost 6 months, in the morning before breakfast. I haven't had any ill effects from it, which I'm surprised at as iron tablets usually upset my stomach and before I started taking the conception support tablets I'd been taking feroglobin liquid iron.

If you're in the UK, and switching to taking your usual tablet in the evening doesn't work, might be worth having a look at the Boots ones? Plus they're cheaper, and they have pretty much everything in them that the more expensive brands have (I think pregnacare have more things in them, but I have heard so many people say they've felt sick taking those). Otherwise, as MindUtopia says, you can just take folic acid on its own. I hope you feel better soon!

Somtimes people get sick from taking supplements because they dont' actually need them. If you have a healthy diet then you might be adding too much of the folic acid with the supplements, which will make you sick.
