Hi there

I have read on a few websites about different foods you should avoid.

Now feta comes up - some say fine as long as it is not goats feta and others say avoid. Which is it. I love feta on my salads, so really need to know if I should avoid it altogether or have it in small quantities.

deli meats - are we talking the sliced ready cooked meats? Does that include salami? We tend to buy salami unsliced and slice it ourselves, we keep it in the fridge obviously. So is this out?

Eggs - ok, I know raw eggs are out, which is absolutely fine by me, but how many a week can you have?

Any other tips would be appreciated, also any goodies that you CAN eat??

I think feta should be avoided bec it is unpasteurized. Always check the package and see if it is either pasteurized or not. If it is, then u can eat it.
Avoid raw meat, and raw egg.. runny egg isnt good.
Minimize caffeine intake as well.

These are the only ones that come to my mind.

Try not to worry about that too much.

Every single day there are more things that pregnant women should worry about splashed about all over the media. Makes pregnancy really difficult.

As suzan said. Check when you buy it to see if it's pasteurized. Most of them should be though. I haven't found a single brand in South Africa (where I shop) that isn't.

Deli meats. They have an issue with them because they stand out with other meat all day. It's not really hygenic. Try and go for sealed meats. Or cook them before eating.

Seriously I'm not claiming to know all this by default. It's what my gynae told me.

Raw eggs I stay away from but obviously once they're cooked it's fine. The same with raw meat. But we should all know that anyway. Pork... tapeworm... eeeuw!!!! :D

I have mainly just been eating what i used to, just making sure everything is cooked properly (i have had a funny runny eggs which i didn't know until recently i shouldn't have, oopps). I have had to cut down on tuna which i love, my MW told me two portions per week is allowed. you should avoid fish that is high in mercury. Peanuts you should avoid. also heard you shouldn't eat chutney.

I still have a few cups of tea a day and a can of cola a day. Can't cut out everything!

I read in a pregnancy magazine that eating an apple a day halves the chance of your baby developing asthma, worth a try, so i have been having an apple a day.

The runny eggs thing really annoys me. It's all to do with salmonella. But aren't all chickens vaccinated against salmonella now?! And surely, if there was a risk of getting salmonella from Dippy Eggs (mmm dippy eggs), or fried egg with a runny yolk (mmm again), then nobody should be eating them, let alone pregnant women! Maybe I just misunderstand why we aren't allowed to eat them..... Sorry... but I do love my dippy eggs and shoulders... getting all hormonal now...... actually.. and craving a dippy egg.

Next week they'll be telling us that pronatal supplements are really bad for you in weeks 5 and 24... and that if you stand on your head for 20 mins a day, you will have a more intelligent baby....................

I think the others have made excellent points, although you should watch what you eat (to a certain extent) you don't want to limit yourself (it will only cause you stress and you'll miss out on the foods you like!)

Cheese is fine as long as it's pastuerized, stay away from any that isn't. With deli meats I cook them a bit before eating them to get rid of any bacteria. Eggs are fine to eat as long as they are cooked through thoroughly, actually everything you eat should be completely cooked (including meats).

Honestly I think they just like to worry us pregnant women!

I just looked up the whole runny egg thing. Lion Stamped eggs are gauranteed to be salmonella free. Then I rang the midwife.. and she said she agreed with me, but the rule still was no runny yolks in pregnancy... but it's my decision, and she would eat them in small amounts...
go figure... :)

my dad is an ice cream man, do i avoid nonpasturised then???? im confused!

I have cut out a lot of foods- runny eggs, nuts, all seafood- all cheeses that are unpasturised. At the same time, my foods are still varied without these. I have to think about what im eating before i eat it nowadays.

I pretty much eat what I want. I do stay away from fried eggs with runny yolk in the middle (which I miss terribly). I don't like tuna or the fish they tell you to stay away from so that part is easy for me. I still eat deli meat, packaged, from the deli, and I love Subway. During the 1st trimester I stayed away from caffeine, I could only drink Sprite (only thing that calmed my belly). I never used to drink much pop pre-pregnancy but the 2nd trimester I couldn't put it down for awhile, so I put it down and started drinking juice.

There are so many things that they tell pregnant women to stay away from, if we did, then we would starve. Just think, how did our moms make it when they were pregnant with us? Just take things in moderation and you will be fine. Of course, if you're really not sure, ask your doctor.

Is tuna ok in small amounts? I'm veggie and so protein is an issue for me so I probably have tuna once a week at the most.

Also I heard blue veined cheeses were out.

Thanks for the replies girls.

AnneMarie - I'm with you, dippy eggs, runny eggs and toasted soldiers mmmmm, bacon and runny egg butty, mmmmm. Oh stop it now!! I'm sat here with a bowl of fitness as I don't drink milk and can only stand it with cereal, so I am being a good girl!!!

I am staying away from peanuts (not that I ate them but been a big fan of peanut butter since I was a little girl, a llllllooooooonnnnngggg time ago!), I suffer from asthma, exzema and hayfever so no peanuts at all!

Feta - I live in a foreign country and I am going to have to look up the word pasturised so my other half knows what I talking about! I'm not a big veggie lover but love salad and can't have salad without feta, maybe in small amounts?

I am suffering with a little nausea at the mo and I read that ginger can help, ginger biscuits was my friends favourite, but can I find bloody ginger biscuits anywhere!!!!! typical.

I don't drink coffee, but I do drink diet coke, I read about the caffeine intake and now I try to have only 1 glass a day, in the morning to wake me up. If I don't I'll be asleep at my desk by 12!!

So you would say that pre packaged sandwich/deli meats are fine? The local place we go have meats out in the open in fridges of course but also prepacked. I will only go for pre packed if you ladies say it's fine :)

If I find any other news, I'll let you know. Thanks to you all xx

Mervs mum - i was told by midwife i can have two portions of tuna per week. I presume thats like 2 small tins/sandwiches.....

you need to get someone back home to send you some gingernuts :)

Just read that.. now I want tuna! Its ages since I've had any aswell

yes i'm not sure salami is cooked is it? (I say having realized into my second tri that i'd been eating dried / cured hams adn salami thinking it was OK...)
I think maybe we should avoid it unless cooked on pizzas etc. Shame...I love a salami sandwich!!!

As long as the cheese syas pasturized it should be fine i think....
but i read just now from teh food standards agency: There are different types of goats' cheeses available. The type that is probably most common in the UK has a white rind similar to Brie and Camembert. This type of goats' cheese is sometimes called Chevre and is often served in restaurants, for example in a goats' cheese salad. You should avoid this when you are pregnant. However, other types of goats' cheese that don't have this kind of rind should be fine to eat, particularly hard cheeses.

Now, my goats cheese does have the white rind...but it says Pasteurized on it so who knows'!?!

Morning ladies. This may seem like an incredibly stupid question, but is all milk pasteurised? Ok, I live in a foreign country, where the alphabet is totally different, I'm still trying to master it, I have looked in the dictionary for pasteurised, but can't find it. I have cereal and milk, obviously, but there is no English on the carton so this is why I ask the question. It's a hell of a lot harder when you can't read the labels clearly, so I'm gonna stick to what I know.

Salami is now off the menu. Pre-packed sandwich meats, a big no no?? No more salami, that's not a problem.

Regarding Vitamin A. I could read on the side of the milk carton that vit A was in it, only a small amount, is this ok?

мед. термотерапия
Thats something to do with heat treatment..... according to some internet bulgarian-english dictionary...
... hope that helps :)
