Okay, I know the basic alcohol, sushi etc, but I just read a thread about how you should avoid Mayonnaise - especially the home made ones because they contain eggs.

What foods do I need to avoid? I'm a bit worried now because I just had a burger yesterday with tar tar sauce on it. I'm eating all sorts of foods without really thinking about it (mainly to take the metallic taste out of my mouth).

Is it ok to have cooked eggs? Fried, poached, boiled?
I heard praws might be bad for you...is that true?

basically hun anything you eat such as mayo etc must contain pasteurised ingredients etc. Thats the key - that its pasteurised if it is then its fine to eat. u must avoid homemade stuff as it is made with raw egg. You can have cooked egg but both yolk and white must be solid, raw prawns no, cooked prawn yes as long as they are cooked thoroughly. Just check the ingredients list of anything that contains something you are unsure of. if that ingredient has been pasteurised its fine. dont eat swordfish, and limit tuna and sardines. no mould ripened cheese, no pate.
Hope this helps

Youll be fine as franiss says as long as pasturised, ie Jarred mayo will be ok, i even bought tesco chicken tikka sandwich filler as it said on the side in the ingredients the mayo was made with pasturised egg. I would avoid mayo and mayo based salads in restaurants incase theyve made the mayo themselves (although my friend whos a chef says they are not allowed to make their own mayo anymore and have to buy it in, but you never know if everyone follows the rules).

I would also mention that it is not advised to eat salads you have not washed yourselves especially those in salad bars/sandwich shops/burger places due to the risk of listeria. some people dont worry too much about that, but my mums friends baby was still born after she contracted listeria from a prepacked tuna salad. So ive always just avoided salads while in restaurants etc.

Anything thoroughly cooked isnt going to hurt you because the worry is bacteria and cooking it kills the bacteria. Your chances of having problems is the same as your chance were of it making you sick before you got pregnant. It is just worse on you and baby if you were to get sick from it now. Just stay away from non pasteurized dairy and raw foods and you will be just fine. Use moderation with mercury containing foods like tuna. Even if you eat those foods it's still pretty unlikely you'll get sick.

hi, i've looked into it alot about mayognaise because i lurve a huge dollop on my burger at the weekends... and basically its only the homemade ones you really have to avoid cuz of the raw eggs but the shop bought ones are USUALLY ok, i think its really upto you, x

Thankyou everyone for the great advice. I feel so much better knowing what I can and can't eat.

:hugs:
