Have all of you been to an RE who prescribed Clomid? Or do normal OB/GYNs also prescribe it? Just curious, as I've made my appt for the RE but not sure that we would really go much deeper into treatment than drug therapy. So if my OB/GYN could prescribe it, then maybe I don't need to bother with the RE after all? I don't mind going and hearing the recommendations and options, but the earliest appt I could get was October 5th, which means I'm wasting even more time if all they're going to do is start me on Clomid anyway.

Not sure about what happens elsewhere but in Britain and Northern Ireland, the steps are :
1. Doctor visit after 12 months
2. Tests ran
3. Referral to Fertility Specialist
4. First Appointment resulting in more tests
5. Second Appointment treatment options and possibly start treatment - If Clomid or other pills are the treatment.

Over this side of the ocean, it has to be a Fertility Specialist that prescribes them, not the usual doctor.

Different places have different rules though, just thought I would share this in case there are any women this side wondering the same question.

I would recommend calling your OB/GYN and asking them before making the decision.

uk i am from and my doctor doesn't prescribe clomid i had to go to a local hospital and they gave them me x x x

I'm in the US and my regular OBGYN prescribed Clomid for me. Then after 4 BFN cycles she also prescribed me estradiol and progesterone to add along with the Clomid. HTH!

I'm in uk and ive got 3 months of clomid from my GP before being referred to specialist as its obvious im not ovulating, just haven't started them yet!

The regular OB can prescribe Clomid...however, I would still recommend going to the RE. OBs main focus is on people who are already pregnant, and I found that I wasn't getting the personal care I was looking for because they need to hurry up and get you out ASAP for others. At the RE, since the focus is on infertility, I found them to be much more helpful...and Clomid may not be the best treatment for you. I went in with the "I need Clomid" mindset, but ended up being prescribed Femara with a much larger treatment plan, that involves solving my PCOS long term - not just to get pregnant. I think my OB would have given me Clomid, but I'm glad I took the time seek out a quality RE and I feel like I am getting better care now.

I am in the UK and was prescribed clomid by me GP who gave me incorrect usage instructions and didn't carry out tests to find out what was causing problems before prescribing. I ended up pregnant the first month we tried it but lost in a MMC at 10 weeks and then the GP kept me on it for too long and I ended up with OHS Syndrome.

My advice is to see a specialist x

I agree completely.

My regular ob/gyn is an ob/gyn, ha! Her focus is on gyn care and pregnancy, NOT infertility. She's great and knowledgeable, but she doesn't deal with infertility all day, everyday.

My RE gave me femara as well. My problem isn't PCOS, but unexplained infertility. My ob/gyn would have given me clomid but they don't do the extensive monitoring that I need with fertility meds. If I would have stuck with my ob/gyn, at best it would have been half-a$$ed.

Good luck.

Thanks for your input, ladies. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but I guess you're right. Maybe there is a better treatment for me that I wouldn't even know to ask for. For now I plan on keeping my appt with the RE. Just wish I didn't have to wait until October!
