just looking for others opinions:

in france a childs name has been forcably changed against parents wishes by the court

the child who was named 'Nutella' was legally renamed 'Ella' by a judge (without the parents being present) because the name of a food substance will lead to 'teasing or disparaging thoughts' apparently

also france has in the past tried to ban the names Zoe and Megane because they are car names and forcibly changed the name Fraise to Faisine

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

personally I dont think theres anything wrong with Nutella, its odd but hardly child cruelty and she could of gone by Ella when she was older anyway if she had wanted

there are children with far worse names imho like Aryan Justice, Marajuana, Princess, Hitler, Loser, Anal etc... but these have been allowed

I think its a bad name but equally have heard worse. Where do you draw line? Personally I dont see why Nutella can't be the nickname anyway ;)

I think it's a terrible name but quite unnecessary to forcibly change it. I think it should only be done when the name is legitimately offensive, otherwise it's a bit of a slippery slope.

I think it's a horrible name, along with all the other horrible names you listed. Call your dog, cat or gerbil Nutella, not your child.

One of the others on the list of banned names was Lucifer. Why? Am I missing something.
its not my style but is there something about lucifer I dont know?

Lucifer is the fallen angel that serves the devil I think

Ahh ok, I just think of the little mouse from cinderella... or was it the cat?

and as for nutella its stupid but not as bad as being called Pilot inspektor or Fifi Trixibelle

The name lucifer was the devils name before he fell from heaven.
And I agree, they should be less worried about Nutella then say, loser.

No I don't think it should be banned unless it's really offensive or has obvious inappropriate connotations. Lucifer and Nutella are fine. Was Anal the actual name or was it the French equivalent? Cos Anal, in English, might be a perfectly normal name to French speakers.

On the Guardian article about it it made a point that the name Lenin is not banned, which seems a bit weird a point to make. Lenin wasn't that bad. And anyway, the name Joseph is still really common.

I think it'd be ridiculous to ban names because someone named that did something awful though. Surely it depends on how commonly the name was used beforehand, I assume Adolf was uncommon enough even in Austria and Germany to become taboo as a name after Hitler, but Joseph (I assume you're referring to Stalin?) is too common for that to rule it out, after all Joseph is a major character in the Christian nativity! My grandad is called Joseph and I never think 'Stalin'! Both Ian and Brady are 'normal' names but Ian Brady is a sociopath serial killer!

As for little (nut)Ella, I've heard worse but France are notoriously anal about language and tradition, it doesn't surprise me and parents can still use the full name as a nickname if they wish.

My point was that I don't really think it's fair to ban any name that was a well used name just because it has had associations with someone like Hitler. I just found Lenin a particularly odd example because IMO he was relatively mellow in comparison to many many others.
