When using the big tin of formula powder (i've not used it before) how long does the tin tend to last? Also can you make up more than one bottle ie a days worth at a time and keep it in the fridge or do I have to do them one at a time? How easy is it make the bottles up....is it a lot of hassel?

We've always used the cartons but i think it will be much cheaper to use the tins, as long as they are not too much hassel

thanks ladies xx

Tin is lasting me a week and thats 6-7 5oz bottles a day.

I make on demand but you can keep formula in the fridge for up to 48 but I wouldn't keep it for longer than 24.

Dead easy to make up bottles.

With Nathan a tin used to last me about a week with 6 7oz bottles in a day.

I used to make up all 6 bottles at once and store them in the fridge. If for some reason I hadn't used them all within 24 hours then I would get rid of them :)

I'd say about a tin a week - you CAN make the feeds up in advance & store in the fridge, but it is not recommended, they say to make every feed as you need it, but what I do is sterilise the bottles, then fill with the cooled boiled water & then keep on the side until LO is ready for a feed, warm the water then add the powder - MW & HV both siad that this was fine. Saying that with DD I made feeds up in advance & it never harmed her - but if Jack was ill & I had been using stored milk I would feel guilty!!:dohh:

I make up all of my bottles in advance and put them in the refrigerator. Never had any problems with it! I do 24 hours worth of bottles at a time :D A tin can be used up to a month after opening, but if you are exclusively bottle feeding you'll probably go through at least 1 a week.

yeah im going through a tub of formula in just over a week.

what i do is sterilise the bottles then add cooled boiled water then store them on the side at room temp.
then when joshua is ready for a feed all i have to do is add the formula, he wont take it warm has to be room temp.

MW said if your LO will take it at room temp thats fine.

some people heat the water then add the formula coz their LOs like it warm or because they say that the formula powder isnt sterile so the water needs to be at a certain temp(hot) to kill any bacteria.
it all depends what your views on it are.
MW said you dont have to have hot water it all depends on how you feel about it. i.e. bacteria.

ooh thats a good ide, I'd not thought of that!

Chloe has always had it at room temp, thats cos i cant be bothered to faf about warmimg it up and she doesnt mind, she will hve it however it comes, she will even take it straight out of the fridge, although I dont usually do that!!

**Donna rushes out to buy more formula in preparation lol !!**:wohoo:

Mine lasts a week too. I always make up my bottles, 3 for the day, then I make another 3 at night. I sterlise them then fill them with cool boiled water and leave them on the side and add the formula when I need it, hasn't done Grace any harm

I think thats what I will do, seems easy enough, when you've filled the bottles with water do you put them in the fridge or leave them out?

it is a good idea and the old advice did recommend this.

Then they said to only add the powder to boiling water (not allowed to cool for loger than 30 mins) because the powder is not sterile and the hot water kills the bugs. Because of this I would make up 6 bottles witht he folrumar added, cooled them off and kept them in the fridge.

I guess either way is fine :D

Wow that has changed quickly! Just found the guidelines online now, & even though they say they are dated 2007? I remember having leaflets & reading online that the only recommended way to do it when Jack was born was to add the powder to boiling water, but to cool & use straight away, so you made one feed at a time, & that was 4 mths ago?! I think I will start adding the powder to the cooled boiled water now, as it sounds better than what I am doing at the moment (& easier!) Thanks Newt!

Everything I've read and been told is what Newt just said, to make the bottles up and add formula within thirty minutes of the water being boiled and immediately put into the refrigerator. :D That's what we've been doing and Hannah hasn't had any problems.

I started adding powder to cooled water but the powder didnt disolve properly and would clog up the teat so now I make up 3 or for with boiling water, leave to cool then put in fridge, works much better

I leave mine to cool is cold water first......after the contents of my fridge went bad a few times
