Hi all

I've just got out of hospital after a massive bleed on Monday ( i'm currently 26+5 ...) and have been told i have a funnelled cervix. They mentioned from the hand internal my cervix might be short by on the internal ultrasound notes it says 'slight funnelling noted at the interal os with a maximum width of 7mm and length of 13mm'. Does anyone know if that is low or high?? Am a bit worried.

Has anyone had this and gone full term?

Thanks in advance ladies!

Hi hun. A funneled cervix which is 13mm long is definitely short. A " normal" cervix at this stage should be over 28mms, and can measure anywhere up to 50mm. Funneling is basically where it has begun to open at the top, but is closed at the bottom - you have 13mm of closed cervix below the funneling.

This may have been the reason for the bleeding, and a definite sign that your cervix is weak under the increasing weight of bubs. However, you are almost 27wks pregnant now, and your baby is reaching a stage where she is too big to come thru an incompetent cervix if it were to now dilate fully. An IC opens without contractions because it is not strong enough to stay closed. It usually opens to 3cms, and will not open any further unless you went into full-blown labour with strong regular contractions.

I would recommend complete rest for you hun. I have spoken to many women with similar problems who go on to term due to plenty of rest. Taking weigh off your cervix really can cause it close up and gain length again, and the fact that you have made it this far before any detectable changes to your cervix means yours is not entirely incompetent and has every chance to recover again.

Get in touch if you need me hun - and please take things easy x
