If you have GD are you always induced? Also is there a difference between times of this if you are metformin or insulin?

Im not diet controlled and on metformin at the moment but this is not keeping my numbers at the level they should be so on my next app I am more than likely going to be put onto insulin.

Im scared of this, does it hurt a lot to inject yourself and do you only use it if your numbers are high?

Is it commont o be induced at 37-38 weeks in the UK if insulin? im getting worried of immature lungs and of stillbirth

If you need insulin you'll probably have at least part a set amount. Your meal amounts may vary. The shots usually don't really hurt. You could go into labor before they would even think about induction. I think it the UK they do more monitoring than just set induction and only induce if there is some reason. I had GD needing insulin from 8 weeks on. My boys were born by planned CS at 37 weeks both with perfect APGARS. My MFM was fine with them being born at 35 weeks+ (because of complications) and said she didn't see them needing NICU from then on based on what she saw.

Im pretty sure in the UK they wont induce before 39 wks unless there is complications, i was told this last November... I have GD also had it last pregnancy and had c/section at 39 week because of GD and previous c/sections... My consultant doesn't like you to go over your EDD if you have GD but wont deliver any earlier than 39wks... Before the new guidelines i had a c/section at 38wks, not for GD but because baby was breech... Also i find injecting insulin is actually less painful than testing your blood sugars... The main problem i had when it came to having to inject insulin was just the fact i had to see the needle going into my skin, im over that now lol but testing your blood is definitely worse than injecting insulin... I was only on insulin at night time but have now had to take some with my evening meal too.

I have GD and diet controlled for now, im 32weeks. My consultant said even if all is well they will induce by 39weeks. I will be needing metformin in the next week or so as I cant keep my levels right, even though im trying. I go to the hospital every 1-2 weeks for scans and check ups, midwife said at 36weeks they will give a date for induction.

I had GD when I was pregnant and was induced at 37 weeks but I had a couple of complications.

Diet controlled and metformin didn't work for me.

Hi Kate,

I had GD last year with DD, was monitored closely with weekly visits at hospital & 2 weekly scans..... I managed to diet control up until 32 weeks with the blood sugar testing & was then put on metformin which really helped my numbers go down..... I was Induced @ 38 weeks which resulted In a Xmas Day baby :-) It was IVF, 1st live birth..... Had previous 3 miscarriages & also 1 ruptured ectopic, I honestly don't know If that played In any part of them making the decision. I'm also awaiting until I hit 24wks with this baby for the GTT & crossing everything that I don't have GD again but If so we will cross that bridge when we come to It.... I'm sure your consultant will make the right choice for you both when It comes to It x

I have GD, diet controlled for now and going well and they told me that most women with GD go into labour early naturally but if not, they don't want me to go past 38 weeks. It's mainly risk of the baby getting too big. I'm going to ask if I can have growth scans rather than going straight for induction and if baby seems a normal size and doing well, I don't know if I will agree to be induced.. but to answer your question lol.. I think it's likely you will go into labour yourself a bit earlier and if not, I think 38 weeks is the earliest for induction unless a significant issue arises of course x

I had gd with both pregnancies, first one metformin controlled and scheduled for induction at 39 weeks but came of his own accord the day before. Second time I was on metformin and small amts of insulin and was induced at 38 weeks. My hospital policy was induction of labour is preferred at 38 weeks if on insulin. X

Oh and also, I was really upset when put on insulin but try not to stress hun, you may not even need to go on it. It doesn't hurt when you inject with the pen, it's so quick and the needles are sooo thin you don't notice after a while. The finger pricking is more painful IMO! Xx
