GD Concern

We went to our MFM today for our weekly fluid check on the boys. She now has me very worried. We lost our daughter at 27 weeks and don't really know the reason. She told us today that even small spikes in blood sugar can cause the babies to become hypoxic and suffocate because they have to break down the sugar (since my body doesn't very well) and that uses oxygen which can keep them from having enough. All I ever see being talked about as a complication is big babies, where this seems to be a MUCH bigger concern, yet it's the first I've heard about it. (The endo did tell me that MC and stillbirth were very common with blood sugar issues as well, but not that small spikes could cause them.)

I knew that stillbirth was a higher concern with GD but was not aware of the reasons behind it. I am now freaking out as it looks like I will probably diagnosed with GD after I repeat the test next week. I had it in my last pregnancy too and my blood sugars were pretty stable even without meds but this will make me more cautious, especially as one is not growing as well now.

I didn't know the spike on sugar could cause this. I was diagnosed with GD at 16 weeks and I've been taking insulin since then. I thought too the only complication was big babies. Now I'm worried! There are days where I forget to take the insulin. Thanks for sharing. :hugs:

I think this concern is why they usually induce or section GD mummies at 38/39 weeks nowadays before the 'danger zone' of stillbirth arises. Hard to absorb I know as I'm in the same boat but please try not to worry about it your in very good hands xx

My first was nearly 27 weeks when she died, so the concern is FAR before just the end. I am being induced or sectioned at 37 weeks (unless anything indicates we need to go sooner). I'm trying to be extra careful in what I eat (and obviously in taking my insulin). My husband is good about reminding me if I forget something.
