I'm on metformin, 2 x2 tabs but have now also been put on insulin once at night. Now my numbers are all high and i feel like giving up. I wrote before about having binge eating issues and this isn't helping. I heard people saying that when they're on insulin they can relax the diet a bit, maybe this would help me as i'm really struggling to keep my eating under control. Any ideas?

This is not good advice!! I am assuming that the insulin you are on is a long lasting, slow release insulin that is meant to act as your basal throughout a 24 hr period. It is not meant to act as a bolus and cover your food. I would recommend talking to your Diabetic nurse and dietician and have them explain to you how your medication works with food and carb counting. Also explain some of the issues you are having with food. Good luck and I hope you get some answers..but please don't think you can eat whatever you want now that you are on insulin. It's not how it works.Sorry. PM if you have any questions:hugs:

spoke to diabetic mw, readings up a bit anyway so she put me on low dose of fast acting insulin to have with meals aswell as metf 2x2 and long acting insulin at night. See how it goes.

good luck once you find your rhythm it will be ok - bu please be aware your insulin needs will change throughout pregnancy xx

I'm also on 2x metformin a day and 3 injections a day of fast acting insulin before meals and 1 x slow release insulin at night. I'm really careful with my diet and my sugars still go out of control and the doses keep being upped every 2 weeks at the moment. I'm the same as you and hoping to get to a happy medium soon for a little while at least lol xxx

unfortunately I have been diagnosed with early gestational diabetes too blood pressure was high but under control without any meds ... :-), however as for my Sugar I have been put on Metformin 500 3x a day for the first 4 days and now with very low dosage of insulin fast acting in the morning and one slow and fast acting @ night. ....

i am doing all that i need to do to help the sugar etc, food intake all of it ...its a lot to deal with but DONT TAKE IT LIGHTLY .. you have to change your eating habits and all ... i have even if i dont like what i eat .... if you like i can send you my plan ....

e.g my plan

breakfast 7 ish, something to eat 9 ish, something to eat 12 ish, Lunch 2 ish, something to eat 4 ish, Dinner 7 ish,

the maximum i delay from the time frame is 30 minutes or so ... every thing i eat is skimmed/ lowfat, fruits - kiwi, grapfruit, orange, apple and or strawberries about 5 medium size.

I hope this helps, they told me if i dont control it then it will harm the baby and me ... and i can develop the diabetes permanently or develop type 2 sooner that i expect it.

I am also monitoring my sugar pre and post, breakfast, lunch and dinner since 16.10.12 - which is when i was diagnosed, till date and once it is under control will have to do it 3 times a week minimum.

Good Luck

I'm actually type one diabetic but it emerged through pregnancy, i guess it was just lurking..

Well with my first pregnancy i was diet controlled and i was fine, diagnosed second trimester.

Second pregnancy i was on insulin at 24 weeks (which was abit late really and i was scrimping my diet from the start) i was just on bolus (fast acting with meals) it was okay as it meant i could relax my diet abit, i didn't eat any sugary things but it enabled me to eat things like toast/sandwiches/pasta etc and have good readings. You will need to adjust as you go along though as the hormones/growing of baby will add more insulin resistance. x

I'm now on metformin 2x2, long acting insulin at night and fast acting insulin at lunch and dinner. so far seems to be working ok and i can sometimes 'get away' with eating more than i probably should which helps tgo stop the eat-guilt-eat cycle. not long to go now...
