Quick back story: I have GD and am currently on 500 mg metformin twice daily, which has kept everything fine.

For about a day and a half now, all my numbers are extremely high for me. My dinner numbers are usually between 95-115, last night's was 172, even after washing my hands and retesting. My breakfast score was 136, which is high, again. After both meals I felt dizzy with blurry vision. And now LO is crazy active like I've never felt. I'm calling the Dr when the office opens, but I just wanted to know if this is normal hyperglycemic symptoms.

I'm most worried about the activity, I guess. It felt almost like hiccups, but in 2 spots at the same time. He's not in distress, is he? I'm hoping it's just a sugar high and nothing longterm that won't get fixed soon. I was hoping to avoid insulin, but I may be outta luck :(

aw those numbers sound high :( I noticed the same symptoms during my GTT when my blood sugar spiked...as well as baby going a bit crazy! I think it's the sugar that gets them going, but I don't think they're distressed...just on a sugar high like you said!

Definitely talk to your doctor and try not to worry too much. Your numbers are high but not really to the point where they're dangerous to the baby I don't think <3 :hugs:

Thanks, zan. They're really high, especially for me and with the meds. The office is opening soon, so I'll be calling then. Lo's calmed down a bit, so it must've been the sugar. Apparently I gave him an in utero pixy stick :/

Not sure of the answer to your question, but I do want to say that if you DO end up on insulin, it's really not the end of the world. I was put on insulin because I had a few dinner numbers a week in the low 120s (supposed to be under 120 at 2 hours) and was DEVASTATED. However, the shots barely hurt and nothing about it has been bad at all. And if it helps my numbers stay down, it's totally worth it. :)

Called the doc and she just doubled my metformin dose. If it's still next week by my appt, I may have to switch to glyburide. I know the GD isn't my fault, but I feel bad not being able to control it. I was diagnosed around 24 weeks, so I've done ok. It seems to be a progression of stronger meds needs every few weeks, but they did say at my GD class that is gets harder to control as the pregnancy progresses. And you're totally right, mhk, if insulin keeps the baby healthy, I can handle it :)

Ugh..I just posted about the possibility of being put on insulin.
I guess in Canada it's different....I failed my 1 hr glucose test and right away had to start the testing/diet change...they didn't offer me the longer test, just straight to the hard stuff.

Now I have to go straight to insulin without trying different medications first.

:(

Don't be upset about being on insulin rather than other medications! It's actually MUCH easier to control the amount you receive and therefore much less likely that it will cause lows. My doctor won't even prescribe oral medication b/c it's not 100% proven safe during pregnancy.
