Hiya ladies

I have one son and was induced in hospital as had insulin controlled GD from 18 weeks.

I really want a home birth this time. I am high risk, due to my age (37) high BMI and the GD. Can they refuse to home birth me? Obviously if at any point even before labour they tell me my baby is in danger I would be the 1st at the hospital. Little man was born with no health problems so I can't see a risk from the home birth just yet.

Anyone with GD had a homebirth??

Thanks xxx

hey hun, your midwife can refuse but i think they have to refer you to another midwife who might do it but there is no saying that you would find a midwife happy to allow you a home birth unless you went private.
My sister was told no as baby needs to have their blood sugars monitored after the birth x

Technically they can't refuse - the only way they can refuse to send a midwife to a woman who declines to go to hospital is to totally suspend the home birth service in the whole area, which they do if there are not enough midwives to provide a safe service. A midwife is duty bound to provide you with care to the best of her ability and actually can't refuse to attend a birth. That being said, think carefully about why you want a home birth and the risks you would be taking - your first baby may have been fine, but that doesn't mean that this one will be. Hypoglycemia can be a very dangerous thing for a baby - I know someone whose baby kept fitting from it and needed a lot of specialist care. Plus there is an increased risk of complications with the birth, like shoulder dystocia. I'm not saying it's not the right choice for you, but do listen to the advice you are given and do your own research before you make your decision.

Thanks ladies thats great advice!!

I really wanted a homebirth the 1st time around but with having the GD i was told i couldnt. My hospital birth was horrific, I think due to the induction. I want it to be more relaxed this time. I will do whatever my consultant says, I think that will be in the baby's best interest but will definitely fight to much medical intervention. xxxx

Unfortunately I think it's hard to avoid medicalisation with GD. Your best bet is to go into spontaneous labour before your due date, as so far as I can tell, even with diet control, most consultants recommend induction by your due date at the latest, as there is an increased risk of placental insufficiency with diabetes post-term. I had hoped for a nice, normal pregnancy and birth this time around, after a c-section for failed induction with polyhydramnios and oblique lie last time. Now I am getting my head around the likelihood of another section, as induction isn't even an option with my previous section :-( hope all goes well for you x

Aww thats a shame for you. Spontaneous labour would be fab but i really doubt it will happen. They wanted to give me a c-section as four days into my induction still nothing was happening and i was 5 days off my due date. i begged the consultant to try one last thing so they just broke my waters and put me on a drip. It was painful as hell.

I'm really scared of having a c-section. I hope though you manage to go into natural labour and get something like a birth you wanted. GD sucks big time.

When will you get a delivery/induction date?? xx

Sorry can't answer your question as First Time Mum, but hoping you can help me? :):) Due our little boy on 30th May, found out i had GD at 11wks, tried diet controlled and ended up on insulin at 17wks as no other option, so similar story to yours. What week where you induced? I have read 39 for diet controlled and 37-38 for insulin controlled? Also, when did you find out your induction date? I'm nearly 23wks but thinking i mightn't find out until i've over 30 wks? Thanks xx

Hiya

Congrats on your pregnancy :)

Are you having 4 weekly growth scans?? They gave me my induction date after my last scan at 36 weeks. They wanted me in at 38 weeks but i had to cancel as my family were in a car crash. I did go and see the consultant and he said the baby wasnt at risk by delaying it.
I think it depends on the hospital's policy. My hospital do like you read but the one 24 miles away induced at 38 weeks for all GD's.

I had him at 39+2 but got induced at 38+5, he just didnt want to come out lol..good luck. You have lots of time to ask lots of questions and put it all in your birth plan. They wanted to give me a c-section because the induction wasnt working but i just refused as baby wasnt in any danger. They also told me he was a big baby and he was 7lb 2oz which i considered to be perfect. xxx

Thank you :) At the minute i am having 2-3 weekly scans. Oh i'm surprised you didn't get induction date until 36wks, i was thinking i would get a date soon but guess i'm far too early. Sorry to hear about the family accident :(

Haha, sounds like he was clinging in there for quite some time! 7pounds 2 sounds perfect to me :) They have told me to expect an bigger than average baby but he's only measuring 1 wk ahead at the minute! Thanks for the help and advice :) YOur little boy is lovely :) xx

I dont think they give a date too early because it all depends on your scans and how the baby and placenta are coping. Hopefully you'll go naturally and wont need a date :)

He really didnt want to come out. Thank you I'm more than happy with him :P xx
