Hi, I am 24 years old and I am 6 weeks pregnant with my first, prior to this pregnancy My husband and I went through a Miscarriage. It was extremely hard on us but we got through it together. I am so excited but Of course I'm scared of miscarrying again. My Mother always told me that if i ever was to get pregnant the doctor told her that I would need Genetic Counseling. My Mother always told me this but she doesn't seem to remember why the doctor who delivered me told her that. She is trying to get more information at the hospital where I was born but I doubt they will be able to find it. My Mother was 38 when she had me, she had an Amnio done and everything came back fine. I was a healthy baby and we don't have history of any serious diseases or illnesses. Can someone tell me the reasons one would need a genetic counselor? Im so confused and worried. Thank you.

Did you ask your mom the specifics of why? Maybe you carry Tay-Sachs gene, or recessive Cystic Fibrosis, something like that? If not, I'd just let the doctors do their regular scans and the NT scan which screens for major syndromes and defects.

Your partner would have to be a carrier of these above-mentioned recessive genes anyway, so the risk should be kinda low. But by all means, please get the testing done if it'll make you feel better! It's a personal choice. Best of luck to you!

It's impossible to guess why she was told this. I can only tell you that in our situation my daughter will need genetic counselling because she has a very rare genetic disorder which could affect her ability to carry boys and gives her a 50/50 chance of passing the condition to her daughters. I would be surprised if your mother wouldn't remember why she was told this if it was something serious. Sorry can't be more help.
