Hi girls,
With my last pregnancy I had gestational diabetes and controlled it with diet and exercise. No problems at all with my little man. He was born healthy at 7lb,6oz. I am currently pregnant with # 3 and they sent me for an early glucose test this week. Unfortunately I failed it. They said they aren't even going to send me for the 3 hour since my number was around 190. Same as last pregnancy. Anyways my concern is that I am only 17 weeks and I'm just wondering if this is something I could have had in the first trimester as well. If they tested me earlier would I have failed? I have been checking my sugars at home and they seem great but I'm worried I harmed my baby because I had lots of milkshakes and ice cream in the first trimester. I was so sick it was the only thing that made me feel better. I read that high sugars in first trimester can cause birth defects. I guess I just assumed that GD started later in pregnancy. TIA!!

awww hun. I dont no anything about gd, but i no were i am test for it at 26weeks. As your 17 youve found ealry so can start treating it. Ive nvr had gd but i got svere pre e in labour first an high bp frm 17weeks second preg meds at 32weeks. Am now 19+6 with 3rd bp seems fine ecept am really tired an disorentated so am worried gd as looked it up as my uterus measuring 3+ weeks ahead. My other too were under 7ib so dnt want big bubs. I have my scan on mon so see wht says an i may see if can speak mw too. Are you showing signs of gd or just in your blood?.

I was also diagnosed early in second trimester and my biggest concern was what about the harm I have done up to this point. My consultants have been great at reassuring me that everything would be ok and GD really impacts that growth and development in the later stages. I am now 33 weeks and all my scans have been normal. I am sure that everything will be ok, especially as you've been monitoring and most of the time the sugars have been good!

Thanks ladies. I think my biggest concern is also what harm i have done up to this point. I have had no symptoms of GD. I see my doctor next week so I will be able to discuss it with him then.

I just found out I have GD too, although I did not have it with my daughter. I am still waiting to talk to a dietitian and get more info but so far as I understand it mainly impacts the latter part of the pregnancy, so they've just caught yours early on, probably because of your history, so you can start treating it now. I'm trying to stay positive, I had been eating really bad as well, lots of ice cream! But they told me eating bad isn't what caused GD, it's more how your body is processing the glucose/sugar which is something that is out of your control. I read a lot about it last night and it makes sense. It's hard to know your body isn't working the way it should, but I'm glad that we have the technology to find out about things before they cause complications so we can control what we can and have a healthy baby.
