Hi i was diagnosed at 24 weeks with gd im fine with my after meal numbers but my fasting numbers are high so they started me on 8units of insulin at bed time. Baby has always measured right on target. My question is what are the chances of having to take insulin during the day as well as my pregnancy progresses and how far will they let me go before they induce or do a c-section

I think it depends on your Dr and how baby is doing I was told I would be induced at 38 weeks but because I gave HBP my dr said it's looking more like 36 weeks instead. My son has always measured perfectly but I was warned any small change and he's out

Hey, I was diagnosed at 20 weeks and started on insulin throughout the day slow acting (2, 2, 2, 2) (morning, lunch, evening, bedtime)

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and I'm on slow acting insulin (2,4,2,4) and fast acting (6,4,2,0)

It hasn't increased as much as I thought it would have, honestly. But, it will depend on a lot of factors including factors over which you have no control. Mine has been well controlled and I thought that was because I was on insulin, but my midwife told me that some women simply cannot control it, and get crazy highs and lows even with adjusting insulin along the way. It's hormones. It's nothing to do with anything else.

As far as induction is concerned, the evidence doesn't stack up for induction if the GD is well controlled, uncomplicated, and there are no signs of an abnormally large baby or placenta problems. That said, it's still policy in a lot of places. Seems to be 38/39 weeks depending where you are and on your own feelings on induction. Some women choose to refuse induction and request careful monitoring instead.

You will probably receive extra monitoring as a result of the GD as well.

I was put on insulin yesterday. I am 17 weeks. Im taking 6 units of slow acting insulin at bedtime and 4 units during my meals. Diabetes doc told me that with this control over sugar levels it controls the weight gain of babies and minimises the birth of larger babies although many cant control their sugars like J.D said.

My OB told me that I will be closely monitored and if things go well 38 weeks I will deliver but to expect an early delivery too such as 36 weeks. I'm not too worried though to be honest I had gestational diabetes with my twin pregnancy, I had a c section at 37 weeks and the boys were fine. They were monitored for a day because of my GD but they were fine.

Thanks i seem to be controlling my after meal numbers okay so for now insulin is just before bed im hopeful it stays that way

Good luck Hun you can do it :) by the way happy 28 weeks

I just started nighttime insulin as well. My after meal numbers are fine, but my fasting numbers were creeping up to 110-119. I'm on 6 units/night and now they are 100-103. I see my doctor tomorrow and she'll probably want to increase the dosage to get them under 100. I was so hesitant to get on insulin, but I don't care anymore. I tried glyburide first and had an allergic reaction so I had to do something. I don't see myself needing to go on it during the day. Knock on wood!

I had to keep upping my insulin until near the end it starting dropping again. It's very likely before the end you'll need to add meal time insulin for at least breakfast. I had a scheduled CS at 37 weeks but had twins and multiple risks besides the well controlled GD.

HI there,
I've had GD in the past. My last pregnancy 9 years ago was controlled with diet. I just took the test this pregnancy on Monday and passed out twice with vomiting and sweats. They just went ahead and deemed me GD. I went yesterday for a kit and diet plan. Before the test this time I hadn't experienced any issues that I could tell. In the past I knew. Is hypoglycemic really considered diabetic?

They are VERY closely related. Both are because of insulin resistance. I've been hypo for years. You can also get a huge spike before you get the crash (which would be diabetes). It's called reactive hypoglycemia. I had to be on insulin from 8 weeks until delivery and then went back to my normal.

Thanks Amjon. I hope I can continue on the diet to fix things. I flunked one before so bad that they didn't even let me do the 3 hour. Wanted me to go straight to insulin but I convinced them otherwise. I also have a problem with preterm labor and went into labor with that baby the day I turned 36 weeks and he was 6lbs 5ozs. So the diabetes were really working on me then.

Not to hash out bad memories but I see you lost a baby at 27 weeks. I've lost one at 24 weeks and one at 32. I promise its something you'll never forget.

Well they have added 4 units of insulin at breakfast time as my numbers went out of whack :-(

I took 4 units of slow acting insulin last night just after having a scoop of gelato @ 11 pm. I also had some cheese and almonds at 5 am. And when u tested for fasting sugars at 7:15 am my levels 6.4 mmol/l (115 mg/dl) which is the highest fasting sugar reading I've ever had this far. Do you think that the snack might have affected my levels ? I'm also taking 8 units of fast acting insulin before breakfast and 4 before lunch.

Your fasting should be at least 8 hours with no food so if you had a snack at 5am and tested at 7:15 thats not long enough i have cheese and crackers at 10pm and take my insulin i test at 7:30 am and usually have a bs around 4.9

Gelato is not a good snack. Maybe try Greek yogurt instead. You could freeze it if you prefer. Gelato would not have enough protein.
