A friend of mine recently told me that she was giving up with the formula and going onto whole milk instead. Her baby is 10.5 months old. I know about the iron etc but just wondered why from 12 months it's ok to stop formula but not before??

xx xx

i think its because of all the vitamins that are in formula, babies cant get enough nutrients from food alone during the first year as they dont eat enough....and im sure theres too much bacteria or something in whole milk which is why they shouldnt have it before 12m unless its boiled in cooking

I didn't know about bacteria in whole milk - Grace has it with her breakfast!!

xx xx

Here they say none until 12mo unless it's cooked in something, like mixing it with cereal isn't ok. The reason cooked is ok is because it breaks down proteins that are hard on their bellys and is hard for them to digest. That's why they shouldn't have it before 12mo, but it alsodoesn't have the added stuff in it that formula does. Plus usually before 12mo they are taking more bottles than food, their main source of nutrition should be formula/breastmilk until 12mo old then you start cutting out more bottles and eating more "real" food...but drinking too much whole milk can be bad for them, it effects their ability to absorb iron and other nutrients if they have too much.

Its absolutley fine in my eyes esp by 10.5 months. By tghen they can be eating a healthy balenced diet and you can make sure they get vitamins from food you buy.

My Nan fed all her babies watered down whole milk (heated in milk pan to kill bacteria) from newborn, now whilst I wldn't recommedn this it's what Mums did who didn't bf before formula days.

My son was on boiled whole milk by seven months, and I just got rid of formula milk, but then he was having four meals a day and only one bottle of an evening and sometimes in the morning! He was never ill until he attended playschool, he was also very sturdy built too!

Hmm I dunno. I know at around 6 months you can start giving cows milk in cereal etc. But you are supposed to carry on with formula for 12 months as it contains a lot of their vitamins, iron etc but if they are eating a well balanced diet I don't see why an month or so would make much difference. Grace will still be having formula till she is 1 though

I wasn't actually planning on stopping her formula but now I'm worried that she's having it in her cereral when I've always been told it's fine from 6 months for breakfast.

I think we'll just carry on until she's 12 months with her formula just wondered really what everyones opinions were xx xx

I've noticed most of the girls from the UK have said that it's ok for regular milk just mixed with cereal..but here they say not to because it's just like giving it to them regular, it's not cooked down or anything to make it easier to digest. So it's just different in different places, we don't do it here, and honestly if they started recommending it I wouldn't until a year

Here in Canada we introduce it at 9 months and phase out formula by a year old. :)

Ruby no longer has formula milk and is totally on cows milk and has been for the last 3 weeks. I started off giving her it with her cereal in the mornings and then one bottle a day and now she totally turns her nose up at formula which to be honest i dont blame her lol. She has a very balanced diet and certainly is not in any way going without she needs vitamin wise. She is very healthy active little lady xx
