Lucy had a bad reaction to cheese last night (covered in red hives all over, possibly eczema inflammation from milk allergy) so she's got a gp appointment on Monday. I was wondering what will happen now at the appointment and follow on appointments, and does anyone have suggestions for foods until then? I don't yet know what part of the milk is irritating her so don't know what foods are ok.

Hi
I didn't want to read and run. My little boy seemed to be fine with cheese and yoghurt. Then after he turned one I added cows milk to his diet-in mash potato etc and he got sick the first few times then I was trying to narrow it down and realised it was the milk-he came out in hives all over from it.
I've noticed this last week he is starting to react to yoghurt and cheese-they must have a lesser amount of the protein or something to them that he was tolerating better.
Anyhow,we brought him to the gp and we're sent for a rast blood test for allergies. I'm waiting on the results.
In the meantime we're avoiding milk. And as he is allergic to strawberry aswell(found out at 6 months) we're being safe and at gps suggestion and avoiding peanuts, soya and other known allergens. Although he has had egg and been fine.

As for milk we Avoid soy milk as its likely they can be allergic to this if allergic to cows. I think it's the same for goats but not sure. Rice milk is not recommended for under 3s. If avoiding peanuts in case then rule out nut milks. What we've been left with in our local shops then is Oat milk or Coconut milk(in a carton not can-fortified with calcium)
also he's still breastfed and Drinks plenty of water so that helps us.
Hopefully you can get some allergy testing or something?
Best of luck

My daughter had a bad reaction (twice) to pumpkin seeds, which is weird, I know. She's eaten them in the past (in the form of pumpkin seed butter) and then the last two times broke out into a rash on her face, her eyes swelled up and she projectile vomited everywhere. We saw the GP and her advice was just to avoid it and try re-introducing in 3-4 months to see if it's something she might grow out of or if it could have just been something more along the lines of food poisoning (since she'd eaten it in the past with no problems). I expected her to recommend allergy testing, but I guess that will be the next step if in a few months, it happens again. For now, we're just avoiding the pumpkin seed butter and any seed breads that might contain pumpkin seed (haven't cut out other seeds or nuts though and they don't seem to bother her) and waiting it out. For something like dairy though, they might be a bit more proactive with testing. My friend's daughter has a dairy allergy and she uses almond milk in everything, which works well. You might also try the soy cheeses and yogurts if you aren't trying to avoid soy.

Just to mention.apart from avoiding soy for allergies I would be avoiding it for children anyway.
There's research about hormone mimicers and the level of oestrogen etc.if you wanted to look into it. I heard it can cause fertility /reproductive issues in kids.
It may be debated but I am not taking the risk. In small doses its probably ok but I wouldn't be happy for him to drink it daily.
Also with Rice milk Arsenic levels are the problem.

Hope you get sorted x

the doctor said that it isnt a dairy allergy bcause she didnt have a bad tummy or be sick after. But she said she does have eczema. I arent so sure its just eczema though because of how severe the rash was. all she said was to 'monitor everything she eats'. I think that I'll still look into giving her things other than dairy though.

Hives are caused by histamine -the body makes it when allergic to something.its one of the symptoms of allergies and might was the only one at first. An intolerance doesn't affect the immune system so the body doesn't make histamine to defend itself. I don't know much about ezcema except my nephew has it-although it does flare up I have never seen it give him hives?!
Your doc is probably being cautious to diagnose anything and if you cut out dairy because you are quiet sure it's allergy be sure make up for the lack of it in diet in other ways :D
if you do try it again and get a reaction try get allergy testing if you can.
I am waiting for our rast results before adding new foods-you get so paranoid.especially as you can be allergic to anything.

Hope you and dd are well! X

Oh and you don't need to be sick for it to be allergy!
When my boy had strawberries he got hives all over his body got sleepy and couldnt breathe.it was terrifying! And no puking.

It seems like everyone is developing some sort of intolerance to casein and gluten. How curious. I'm in California and I'm seeing an increasing amount of alternatives being sold. We don't drink milk since DH is lactose intolerant. I'm not sure I even ever want to introduce cow's milk and wheat to LO. 60% of kids with autism are successfully cured once milk and dairy are eliminated. I think that says something about leaky gut syndrome.

You don't have to be sick or have a bad tummy for it to be an allergy. My DS has a mix of food allergies (Dairy, nuts, sesame, eggs & garlic) confirmed by hospital tests and the only time he was sick was with sesame which was a severe reaction. His symptoms are mainly bad hives and eczema.

We use oat milk and soy yoghurt. The only thing I can't find a good alternative for yet is cheese - they are all really disgusting!
