GP wont start Metformin :(

Hi ladies I recently posted in the PCOS club thread. I am 25 and been TTC for almost 1 year since coming off the pill. Diagnosed with PCOS after having ultrasound scan on 15th August. Saw GP the day after my scan who ordered more blood to be taken to check hormone levels and said when I came back she would start me on Metformin and refer us to FS to get the ball rolling. Went back today after patiently waiting two weeks and she wouldnt start me on Metformin! She has started folic acid and has referred us. Also ordered tests for my OH and told me to keep a close eye on my weight. She said it would be up to the FS what medication I start on but that Clomiphene may be more appropriate. Now while I can sort of see what she is saying I am on cycle day 125 and feel just awful. It could be up to 3 months before we are even seen by FS. Sorry for the rant just feel this whole process is so slow and really getting me down

Aww I'm sorry! Have you tried another doc? After my second chemical in a year I went in to see my Gyno and he gave me the metformin without testing. He said it can help and can't hurt and greatly reduces miscarriage risk. If i'm not PG in three months he is going to start Clomid. He also told me I needed to be on a whole foods diet (like South Beach). I've been Oving around cd 40 for the past few months. My OPK was almost positive today on CD 16! So I know that it works.

I totally believe that much of it has to do with my eating and adding exercise 45 mins a day, 5 days a week. I've lost 40 pounds this year (Still have 40 to go) on low calorie/low fat/NO exercise with NO change to my cycles. As soon as I switched to a whole food diet and joined the gym I've felt great and my cycle seems to be regulating. You could try that and see if it helps?

Metformin wont help your pcos unless you also have insulin resistance. You really really don't want to deal with metformin side effects unless you have too...your defac will probably order testing for insulin resistance before prescribing met.

If you do get on Metformin..ask for the extended release..its a night and day difference between that and the regular when it comes to side effects like going to the bathroom after meals... regular Metformin is like that Ali stuff..you eat anything carby/fatty/sugary and you end up in the bathroom the rest of the freaking day...my hubby is diabetic and I have PCOS and we were both on the regular..I stopped taking it...and he got switched to the extended release and loves it..total difference...

Thanks ladies. I do have insulin resistance i was diagnosed with fatty liver disease just before i was diagnosed with pcos and they couldnt understand it as not obese, smoker, drinker etc so now it makes sense. I have heard metformin can have unpleasant side effects but it was her suggestion that i start it and then changed her mind. I really don't see the point in folic acid at the moment as its not going to help me ovulate. Just so frustrated with the whole system just now but suppose i will just have to be patient once again and wait for this next appointment. Extended release still gives me the,same side effects...weird. hopefully you get some answers soon, I'm sorry she wont give you anything...she should at least be concerned with controlling your insulin levels even if she doesn't care about the ttc part of things
