Green poo?

Hello

We have just put Sophie onto formula for all her feeds after 12 weeks of pure breastmilk, and a few weeks of combination feeding. Her poos since going onto formula have been like dark green mud - is this normal or something to worry about?

She seems happy and healthy, it's just the colour is worrying me! We are using SMA First Infant Milk.

I said to the health visitor yesterday what are formula poos meant to look like, and the only answer I got from her was "very different from breastmilk poos" but she wouldn't say anything other than that.

My Lo is on Aptamil 1 and has browny/yellow poos - sort of like thick peanut butter. The mud description sounds about right! I have heard of some formulas turing poo green - mainly the comfort formulas but I have never used SMA so don't know if this is a effect of the formula. The prebiotics in formula can make poo runny too (this helps stop constipation). Also, FF babies tend to poo less often than BF babies - my LO only goes every fourth day for example. Hope that helps! And what your HV said really wasn't helpful! I remember when LO first went on Aptamil and got these runny, peanut butter poos and I freaked out - until I came on here and found out that was completely normal for the Aptamil. How are you supposed to know if no one tells you?

Freddie is 6 weeks and on Aptamil comfort, his BF poos were chicken Korma and now his FF poos are green, quite dark sage green colour and he is windy too. He has one a day/every other day...but when he goes I have learnt to leave the nappy on for a wee while as it just keeps on coming!!!!!!

Its not just me then that has found the HV absolutely CRAP!!!!

This happened to me to when I moved from BF to FF (SMA). It lasted about a week, now the nappies are more yellow/brown in colour. Green mud was exactly what it looked like!

My LO's always had dark greenish mud-like poos should I be worried?

It's normal for poo to go green when changing to a new type of feed, whether that's breast to bottle or from one brand to another. It normally settles down after a week or two. If they go very dry, you might need to offer a few sips of water between feeds.

Re the green poos longer term, I would've thought if there are no other problems it's just the way your LO's system is.
