Hi all. Hoping someone can share some advice. My son is 2 months old and exclusively breastfed. The past couple weeks his poop has been pretty green, with the exception of his early morning diapers. Today I I noticed one diaper had a few tiny spots of red, which I'm guessing is blood. He acts fine and is nursing fine also. I'm thinking dairy allergy, but I take in very little to begin with. We see the doctor Friday and I'm paranoid he will ask I switch to formula.

I was wondering if baby has suddenly become more distractible at the breast and is taking quicker more snack like feeds during the day, or being interested in feeding less often and then bigger feeds at night. Sometimes when babies are developmentally more interested in the world than in feeding we have to lead them in taking feeds that bit more frequently and in places that are less distracting. However green poo is very common and often a sign of nothing more than a cold.

If your baby is happy and healthy I don't think there is any need to switch to allergenic formula. The green poo and bits of blood might well just be a gastric virus; they can go on for a couple of weeks in babies with only mild symptoms. Obviously if the blood continues, worsens or your baby seems unhappy in himself then it would need reinvestigating.

Green poo is usually a result of not getting enough hind milk, which is caused usually by an oversupply. or a sensitivity to you eating dairy products. I would think he would have shown a reaction to the dairy by now, but still could be the cause.

If there's blood in their stool that's bad it would be black flakes. Black means it's from internal bleeding. If it's red, it would be from the exit, if that makes sense. His bum could be irritated by the green poo.

Good luck hun!

As pp said it b/c he's getting too much fore milk and not enough hind milk and I've had lots of experience in this since I have an oversupply and fast let down. What I do is pump for 2-5 minutes before an expected feed to get the watery milk out and when she goes to eat she'll get the richer stuff. You can also make sure they finish on 1 breast before switching. They can get a very bad rash from it so give him a baking soda bath if he gets one and it should clear in a day or so.
