Hubby surprised me a few days ago by booking a surprise holiday abroad! I'm over the moon and cannot wait. However, due to the atrocious summer we've had in the UK, I hadn't felt the need to buy any summer maternity clothes - it's now mid October and the few stores that sell maternity ranges have all started stocking winter clothes.

I popped into H&M on the off chance yesterday and was celebrating as I found a few pairs of shorts on their Sale Rail. BONUS!!. I picked up a few pairs of my usual size 12s, made my way into the dressing room to try them on and couldn't get any of them over my thighs! I was feeling pretty hormonal and hot at this point *meltdown*. Hubby bought through every pair of shorts he could find and I eventually managed to squeeze my obviously massive butt into a size 16. I bought them as I had no choice - nowhere else had any maternity shorts but size 16? Seriously?? I'm 27 weeks, have gained 7lb so far and have actually lost weight from my hips and butt as my bump has expanded.

How is it possible that size 12 maternity jeans from Next and Dorothy Perkins are huge on me (needing a bump band to keep them up!) yet at H&M, I can barely squeeze into a 16!! It's doing sod all for my body image or confidence. I will never ever shop there again.

Has anyone else found their sizing to be "wacky" or has my butt just expanded as I walked through their doors??

I haven't bought anything from H&M maternity, but don't stress, they're sizes are obviously just dodgy, and the reason that they've go so many left over to go in the sale. Just cut out the label, clothes sizes mean nothing a lot of the time!

That've a great holiday, I'm jealous.

I've always found H&M quite 'tight' fitting on my body, as like any shops they have a different opinion on what sizes are what.
Always a great way to boost your self confidence :(

Enjoy your Holiday! :D

dont panic i tried a few items of clothing on from there and yep i felt there sizes were way off!

i have maternity clothes from size 12-18!!!!

i ignore the size now!!

Their sizes are very small made VERY small, don't beat urself up about it :) I've went up from a 16 to a 20 in pregnancy so u are lucky lol.

H&M is weird for sizes, I never fit into.anything properly in there so I just go with what fits the best and sod the sizing :) xxx

In my experience, h&m clothing runs very small. I know it can be discouraging especially now but its just their sizing and not you. I've been trying on so many sizes and styles of clothes from all over and nothing fits! It's super annoying. A lot of clothes are made so cheaply anymore that you can try a size 2 and it fits but buy the same thing, same style in another color in a size 18 and it's still tight lol. I tried on skinny jeans in every size and all o them were just as tight, couldn't fit over my hips but just got longer as the sizes got bigger. How does that make sense? Lol. The trick and challenge is finding a flattering style for your changing shape and who cares about the number on the label right now. You have a very good reason to see these new curves emerging.

I so know what you mean!! Their sizes are totally whacked!!
In Next and Dorothy P's I can easily fit into a size 14 but H&M - forget a size 14 it's anything from an 18 - 20 and even then sometimes the 20 is too tight!! And this is after I lost 3 stone(before getting my BFP in Feb) What a compliment!! NOT!!!

I asked one of the shop assisitants the one day how they sizings work and she tried to convince me that I mis-read the label! I walked off in such a fowl mood that day and refused to buy anything else from them!
I hate their sizings!!

I've always found H&M to be very very small made! Don't shop there anymore as a result! Xx

I don't shop at Abercrombie anymore but I did when I was a teen/early 20's. I am 5'1 and at one point weighed 170 lbs. I lost about 30 pounds, bringing me to about 140, and I went back to Abercrombie excited that I could finally fit in their clothes again like I did when I was 16 (I was about 21-22). I couldn't even fit in ANY of their stuff. I know it's like, notorious for being ridiculous in sizing but I was so discouraged!!!

I lost another 30 lbs at one point (eventually settling on a natural weight of 120-125 now... well, pre pregnancy, at 27 yrs old) and have finally just stopped looking at the size and just buying what fits. Stores are so wonky with their sizing and often times the stuff left over on clearance racks are the ones that no one else bought either - obviously for a reason!

Don't let it discourage you! When I got really bummed about sizing, I just bought whatever fit me best and then cut out the tag in the back. Eventually I forgot what size I was even wearing!

I haven't tried their maternity stuff but I find that their ordinary clothes are pretty small. Try not to get hung up on sizes- they are all different. Sounds like you've gained a tiny amount- don't beat yourself up about not fitting into a certain size.

I had exactly the same problem in h&m jeans and shorts, in asda, new look and dorothy perkins I'm in a 12 or 14 jeans and in h&m had to get a 18! I was so depressed!

Yep, H&M is tiny so don't fret.

I'm a size 8 and am still wearing the majority of my own clothes, with the exception of maternity jeans. I tried a pair of maternity jeans on in there and only the 12 fit... I didn't buy them lol.

Clothes sizes are crazy. A size 6 in Next can hang off me, yet there is no way on earth I am a size 6!

I have stuff in a gazillion different sizes from h and m. The sizes are ridiculous! If you think the shorts are bad my advice is don't try the work trousers!!!

H and M just make up their sizes at random. They're total *******s for it. The only way to succeed is to try on all the sizes. When I was working I had a shirt from there that was a size 14 - I'm a size 8.

But their maternity wear IS pretty good. I got a lot of stuff on Ebay and it's done very well; a number of maternity ranges will give you big bare bump reveal by week 35.

Hi ya. Yes! It's crazy isn't it?! I'm also a size 16 in bottoms at H&M but a 12 elsewhere. In fact in my last pregnancy I had a size 8 jeans from next and 16 from H&M. Crazy! And you're right, it doesn't do anything for our body image.
Hope u have a great holiday.

Thank god it's not just me!! I had a maternity size 10 from topshop, and the jeans were hanging off me, so I thought I'd try on the 8 in h&m, I could barely get them over my knees! I tried the 12 on, and that didn't fit either! I would have needed a 14 or a 16 even! When a 10 in topshop was too big!! I was so depressed!

I've had the same problems with topshop.
my 20 week bump didnt fit into their maternity tops - and I left feedback on the items on the site saying that they came up REALLY small but funnily enough my comments got deleted!

I found the same - maternity 12 in Topshop jeans, Asda trousers and jeans, 10 in all leggings. H&M? SIZE 16 WHICH WERE V. SNUG. I cried, then realised that since my other jeans fit it had to be them. Seriously, the 16s are that tight that I can only wear them for a short time. They look better than my looser fit jeans from Asda but at 33 weeks all I care about is being comfy(which is weird because I was all about how I looked up to about 22 weeks!) and not squishing bump. It's not the best feeling when maternity clothes are tight and you're already feeling huge, but please know its them and not you :) Enjoy your holiday!
