Here is the birth story for my little princess, Sophia. In short she was born on 9th March 2012 at 12:57pm. 57 minutes after her due date! She was 7lbs 10oz and was 56cm long.
Well on Wednesday 7th I had been feeling totally normal, I had no signs or symptoms other than a pain in my groin on the left side :S
During the day we had received a phone call to say that OHs Nanna was in hospital poorly. So on the evening we went to go and see her. OH was joking with the ladies on the ward saying we would be back the following day to have a baby because it was my due date. I remember being quite angry because I was convinced I was going to go over due.
When we went home I fell asleep around 10pm. I slept for about 2 hours but kept waking to go to the toilet. I was a little bit poorly (tmi) and was backwards and forwards for about 3 hours. I again didnt think that this was a sign because this had been happening on and off for the past 2 weeks.
At around 2:30am on the 8th march I went to the toilet and noticed I had had a bloody show. I woke OH up and was very excited. I decided to put on a maternity towel. Me and OH sat talking for a while. I was really excited despite knowing that people can get a show weeks before they end up having their babies.
I stood up to go to the toilet about 3:20am and felt a very small trickle. I wasnt sure if it was my waters but I didnt think I was weeing myself!!!!
I had a look and a smell but still wasnt sure. We decided I should have a bounce on my birthing ball to see if anything happened. After a 15 minute bounce I stood up and felt another small trickle. This time I had a look to see if I could see where it was coming from! This sounds disgusting but I didnt want to go to hospital just to be told I had wet myself
At about 4:15am we were sure it was my waters that had went. I was in no pain but phoned the delivery ward just to let them know that my waters had gone. On the phone they asked if I had felt the baby move since my waters had gone. I hadnt felt a lot of movement but I remember not being worried. They told me to go straight in just so they could check that baby was happy.
I drove myself to the hospital because I was in no pain and was convinced Id be sent straight home (I couldnt have been more wrong!)
We got to the hospital about 4:40am and I was hooked up to the monitor and baby was very happy indeed
When they took my blood pressure they said it was high and that there was protein in my urine, they said I had pre eclampsia, just my luck when I had wanted a water birth!!!
I had to stay in hospital and the doctor came to see me and told me it would be beneficial to be induced. I remember being a bit upset because I reallllllly didnt want to go on the drip. When the midwife checked me she said my cervix was totally closed and high
She put in the first prostin tablet at 9:30am. She said I would have to have 2 of these and then go on the drip because she didnt think I was going to progress
After about 2 hours I started to feel quite strong pains. They were totally irregular but strong enough for me to need to breathe through them. The midwife said that I wasnt contracting and that they were just prostin pains! I actually felt like punching her (OooOps)
At 1:30pm the midwife checked me again to find I was 2cm dilated. She was shocked and had to admit that I was contracting all along ha! They monitored my contractions and decided they wouldnt put another prostin tablet in because I was contracting 4 times in 10 minutes and that I wouldn't need the drip (yey!). They left me for 2 hours to see how I was progressing by myself. By now I was in a lot of pain and the only thing that helped was the bath, ahhhh bliss! The midwife gave me 2 codine tablets but within 3 minutes I had thrown them straight up (great :\) they couldnt give me anymore just in case they were still in my system. Judging by my pain they were not!
After the 2 hours I was 4cm and in a lot of pain. At 5pm I decided I really wanted an epidural, at this point I had had no pain relief and I couldnt cope anymore. Because my blood pressure was high it needed to be approved by a doctor first. I didnt realise how long it takes to get an epidural.
At 6:30pm ish I got the epidural. It didnt work at all and I could feel everything just the same as I could before. My contractions were so strong and I was struggling to breathe through them. It took over an hour to get a second epidural and at 7:50 it was in. Well this one kinda worked, I could still feel my contractions but they were bearable. I could also move my legs and change positions easily. The midwife said this was about the best I was going to get.
At 8pm the shift changed and the new midwife checked me at 9pm ish and I was 10cm dilated.
I was told to wait an hour for her head to come down a little more before pushing. At 10:15pm I started to push. I enjoyed this stage as I had something to focus the pain on. After 40 minutes of pushing the babies heart rate started to drop with my contractions. They told me to stop pushing as they wanted a decision from the doctor about what to do next. Well he was in theatre so I had to wait till 11:30pm. I found it hard not to push when my body wanted to, but I didnt because baby really didnt like it. At 11:45pm the doctor came in along with another 3 midwives. They wanted to watch me push. Babies heart rate was dropping to 70bpm but she was recovering quickly. Before I knew it the doctor said that we needed to get baby out ASAP. My legs were being hoisted in stirrups and I was being covered in blue roll! OH was trying to be calm but I could tell he was worried. I dont know why but I wasnt that worried, I think I knew she was going to be OK.
The doctor gave me an episiotomy
and used the forceps to deliver my beautiful baby girl at 12:57am. She came out and gave a small cry. She was absolutely perfect and wanted to feed as soon as she came out. She fed for an hour and was very sleepy. OH was allowed to stay with me and we all fell asleep as a family. At 6:00am I was taken for a bath. On the way out I fainted so had to stay in the delivery room till 8:30am.
I lost quite a lot of blood but fortunately didnt need a transfusion.
Its just over 2 weeks after and my stitches feel fine. At first it was as though someone had sewn up my bum (tmi) My bleeding is minimal now and my tummy has gone back to what it was like pre pregnancy.
Overall I loved my pregnancy and my delivery was good, despite the drama. I was calm throughout and couldnt have done it without my OH.
We love our little girl and life is so different now (in a good way) I am struggling slightly with lack of sleep but isnt every new mum
