My daughter is almost 20 months. She is very demanding with nursing and refuses to fall asleep any other way. We have tired cry it out and it went on for hour leading to her learning to climb out of crib and bruising her leg :( my family says I need to stop breast feeding. I love the bonding but it's getting to point she needs to go to sleep at a decent hour not 1230-1am... Honestly she falls asleep pacifying not really nursing. We are planning on baby proofing her room and changing crib to toddler bed allowing only stuffed animals and a book shelf in her room with a baby gate in doorway... Any advice on kindly weaning or helping the sleep transition? We have a routine bath snack play reading brush teeth change diaper nurse but she has been fighting going to sleep lately :(

Any advice I will be greatful for!

What worked for us was putting the nursing part of our bedtime routine before everything else. So I took her into my room and nursed her, then brushed teeth, then put her in bed and read her a story, then sat beside her and held her hand/rubbed her back/shhhhed (or whatever else she wanted) until she fell asleep. Eventually we dropped nursing from the routine altogether and now she only nurses when she wakes up and sometimes before her nap.

It was really just a matter of giving her something else to expect. It took a while until she was comfortable with it but she did learn that she could no longer nurse to sleep. It was a tough habit to break but totally doable if you're consistent. :)

We did same as pp. My daughter breast fed till 22 months when she self weaned. She bf to sleep most of time. All I did was change routine from bath, book and feed to bath, feed and book making sure to keep the cuddles.

We did this too, but before the transition I had been working on getting the boob out of her mouth before she was asleep so she knew sh didn't need it. So we did the Pantly Pulloff (remove nipple whenever baby starts to drift off, but allow to relatch if gets too upset, then remove again once calm and sleepy, repeat till not upset when nipple removed. So for a few weeks she had been falling asleep in my arms, not with nipple in mouth, after bf; then we changed the order of the routine.

Still nursing to sleep here...and I have no idea how to get him not too. :haha: All the idea above are great!

Still BF to sleep most nights here.

If it works and she's calm then that's what I do.

What worked with my now 2 year old was having papa put him down for the night. After dinner would be bath time, potty, teeth brushing, a couple of bedtime books, boo boo time (our word for nursing), and then papa would put him down. Since we bedshare, he used to wake up demanding boo boos. I simply refused and offered to hold him instead. After a few nights like that, he now sleeps through the night without once demanding the boobs. Hope that helps!
