I made the decision to post this after all the searching I did in the run up to my induction. The further past my due date the more worried I got - I was concerned about the interventions spiralling out of control and an eventual c section. None of which happened thankfully!
So prior to the induction I had two failed sweeps. Cervix was posterior, thick and chunky so no signs of imminent arrival. Upon admission for induction my cervix remained as unfavourable and whilst baby's head was down it was still 4/5 palpable.
Had a 6 hour prostin pessary inserted at 6.30 pm after monitoring. Nothing happened till about 10 when I started to get tightening every 15 min. Decided to get some sleep. Awoke with back ache at about 2 buzzed for paracetamol and was hooked to monitor. Tightenings every 2-3 mins at this point but nothing painful. Decided a second pessary wasn't needed at the moment. Contractions had slowed by 8 am to one every 5 mins so decision was made to monitor for half an hour and then pessary number two. My waters broke at 8.30. No more pessaries required!
Unfortunately due to late baby there was some meconium staining in my waters (very light but there). I was allowed 2 hours to establish labour myself but didn't so the oxytocin drip went up at about 11.
By 12 I was having regular contractions and classed as in established labour. I had my tens machine and gas and air. At about 13.30 I felt like it was getting too much - 3 strong contractions every 10 mins. So I had a diamorphine injection - took the edge off without masking contractions so less risk of forceps and eventual c section. At 15.00 I felt the need to push. 15.20 my baby boy arrived weighing 9lbs 4oz.
He came a bit fast in the end and this made his heart rate drop so they were poised to do an episiotomy and potential forceps (about 8 midwives/doctors present by this point!). The threat was enough for me to push him out! Had a small 2nd degree tear and nothing more.
