I had a scan yesterday at 36 + 1 and baby was only measuring 4lb15oz, and of course I looked up the weight for gestation and it said baby was in 7th percentile and small and mentioned IUGR but consultant or sonographer didnt seem concerned and just took me off high risk and now im just midwife led care! Shouldnt they be keepig a closer eye seeings as shes measuring so small?? Xx

Have you had other growth scans that suggest IUGR? If not, have they scheduled future scans if they suspect it's IUGR?

My little man measured 5th percentile at 37 weeks and turns out to be just that - a little man. My OB didn't suspect IUGR because I had been measuring small all along, and she made the comment that a smaller baby would be easier to push out. He came out 6lb 15oz at 40+1.

Are you sure IUGR is in the cards or could they have just mentioned it while talking through what else it could be?

:hugs:

They didnt mention IUGR - i googled the weight for gestation as she was only measuring 2250g at 36 weeks, i know i probably shouldnt google things but i had been measuring big up untill 34 weeks, this was my first growth scan and have no more now - they said im looking at a 6lb-7lbs baby, the reason for scan was making sure she wasnt too big like my DS xx

Have you had other growth scans? If so has she always been measuring small?

No other growth scan just normal scans and she was measuring in track on scans but my uterus size was always 2 weeks ahead xx

SOrry didnt see the other replies. If you're concerned then talk to your MW. One growth scan isnt enough for them to get an accurate picture, as she could be following the same line x

I dont think im going to get any more scans, im jut mw led care now and the mw i saw the last 2 times r useless!! Ive had so many problems with her! X

My first child measured 9 pounds at 35 weeks and was born weighing 7 lbs, 13 oz, 10 days early. He was "supposed" to be 10 1/2 pounds at birth. My second measured out at 8 lbs., 6 oz. at 37 weeks and was born a day early weighing 7 lbs., 14 oz. He was supposed to be 10 pounds.

My sister's child measured 7 pounds at their last ultrasound and was born 5 days later, weighing 11 pounds, 6 oz. lol

A friend of mine went in and was told her baby weighed 6 pounds at 40 weeks, then he was born a week later weighing well over 10 pounds!

These 3 measurements were taken by 4 different sonographers, and my sister and friend and I all went to different practices.

I KNOW this MIGHT not help you feel any better, but those scans can be soooooo far off. Another thing to take into consideration is that even if your baby is only almost 5 pounds now, that would probably be an almost-7-pound baby in 4 weeks when you're due, which seems to be around the size of your oldest.

My doctor told me that each baby will receive one growth gene for birth weight, coming from either one parent or the other. I was born weighing 8 lbs 6 oz. My OH was born 3 weeks late weighing 7 lbs., 6 oz. My kids have gotten my growth gene up till this point. Now, my baby girl is measuring much, much smaller than the other 2 and looks like she's gotten my OH's.

How big were you and your OH at birth to compare with your children's sizes?

I was born 2 weeks early via c-secion at 6lbs something and OH was born at 10lbs something im not sure about kids dads weight (this baby is a different dad) xx

I'm sorry for intruding, I've asked this previously, but I'll do it again. I had a lower abdominal external scan and it showed no pregnancy at 9/10 weeks since lmp. My question is could they have missed it? Or is it legit at this point? Thank you in advance.

Laurbagss - I was meant to be having a small baby last time, and he was 7lb7oz. It's such a rough science. Also this time I'm set to be measuring small again, but my OH and I are both under 5'4 so I apparently will measure small. (I don't know if this applies to you and your OH too?)

Please try not to worry, if they thought there was a need for concern they would have told you about it and be carrying out further scans x

Just another don't base too much on ultrasounds reply...

When I had a U/S to measure growth at 31w, my doctor's response after doing the U/S measurements (after he had already examined me) was "that's bullshit!" When I asked for clarification, he palpated my belly again and told me that the U/S measurements had the boy weighing in at well over 5 lbs and in the 95% percentile, but that he "had been doing this for over 30 years and there was no way I had a big baby in there - if anything, he was a little on the small side." At my 33 week appointment yesterday (no U/S), the doctor was estimating right around 5 pounds which he said was about average.

Hopefully I won't know for another month yet, but I am hoping his educated guess is more accurate than technology. He seemed confident that it would be.

I was told my baby was small,i had two growth scans one at 32 weeks (4lb 4oz) and one at 37 weeks (7lb 8oz) as FH was measuring behind.OH and i are both 5ft 4ins and were smallish babies (6lb 10oz and 7lb 1oz) and DD turned out to be 8lb 6oz at 40+2.
So my growth scans were spot on.
However its all subjective, depends on who is doing it.
I really dont think its a cause for concern

Ah... Google and IUGR... :nope: Don't let the search engines get the best of you.

If your OB/midwife doesn't suspect problems, you can probably breathe a sigh of relief that you may have just have a smaller baby. And that's not necessarily a bad thing :D

Since ultrasounds are not reliable at this stage, the weight is just a possible estimate and can be 1/2 pounds out any direction.

Since you haven't had any other issues that could be signs of IGUR I don't think you really have a concern. remember some babies come out at 5lbs and some babies come out at 10lbs at 40 weeks perfectly healthy.

It's ok! Hugs! I had a peanut and she is a healthy 8 yr old!

i honestly take growth scans with a pinch of salt unless they seem concerned, the 2 i had with DD indicated she would be around 10lb at full term yet 11 days late she was only 8lb30z, one of my friends from half way through was told she was going to have a tiny baby no more than 6lb even after several growth scans yet he was born 2 weeks early at8lb9oz, so just from those too they are definatey not that accurate,

i had one yesterday as i have GD this time and although im measuring 2 weeks ahead they were surprised he was only on 49th centile but again im just taking it with a pinch of salt afterall they are only estimates, try not to read too much into it and google is the enemy lolx

Do you have your scan report? Does it have the measurements/percentiles on it for both the head and stomach?

I just had a scan yesterday at 37 weeks and was told baby is in the 7th percentile weighing only 5lbs 3oz but said that blood flow and fluid levels looked good so they didn't suspect IUGR. Especially because I had no other risk factors for it. Just said she'll wind up likely being a small but otherwise healthy baby.

I'm personally getting biophysical profile/ultrasounds done twice a week until I deliver because of it to make sure nothing changes (blood flow and fluid levels) and see if there's any change in her growth but doctors aren't worried.

That sounds like an ok weight to me? Don't they expect a gain of .5 pounds per week in the last few weeks? So if born at 40 weeks wouldn't you be expecting a 7lb baby? I hate these estimate things!

And a smaller baby isn't always something to worry about, unless they stop growing or are REALLY small. Sophie is only 5th percentile for length and she's amazing!

I was a small baby and I'm a normal adult (well...mostly).
