Hi Folks,

I need a little advice. My partner and I have been trying to conceive for two years. Due to various things my partner insisted that I have several semen analysis done before she goes for investigations. Well, I've had them all done but my GP seemed clueless as to whether or not they were normal. I have posted my results below (These are uk results). If anyone here has any idea about UK normal values and whether or not these are ok, it may be enough for my partner to overcome her fears and get investigated too. Thank you in advance,

Test 1:

volume - 3 ml
Colour - Opaque
Concentration - 36x10^6/ml
Total Count - 108x10^6/ml
motility - 95%
progression - 3
Abnormal Forms - 10%
Clumping Seen
Abstinence - 3 days

Test 2:

Volume - 4ml
colour - opaque
concentration - 15x10^6/ml
total count - 60x10^6/ml
motility - 70%
progression - 2
abnormal forms - 15%
Abstinence - 2 days

Test 3:

Volume - 5 ml
Colour - opaque
concentration - 40x10^6/ml
total count - 200x10^6/ml
motility - 55%
progression - 2
abnormal forms - 10%
* note - some head and neck abnormalities seen
Abstinence - 5 days

Any responses would be really appreciated.

I'm no doctor, but what I do know is that you're looking for a high motility and as few abnormalities as possible.

It looks like your tests have been worsening over time.

Things you can do:

Lay off the booze / drugs / cigarettes
Have showers instead of baths
Take Pre-Conception Vitamins

I hope others will have more advice for you...!

Tx

Volume: anything over 2ml
Total count/ml: 20-250 mln/ml
Colour: white
Motility: Over 50% category A; Over 25% category B
Abnormal forms: fewer than 70%

Or check Wimipedia - you can get more info from there.

It looks like your results got worse. Were you partying before the 2nd and 3rd tests? How far apart were they?

Thanks so far for your replies folks... Apparently the longer the abstinence the lower the motility rate will be... any thoughts? I hadn't drunk, partied and I don't smoke... The only difference was the length of time I abstained... Thanks again

Yes, that sounds right as your sperm gets 'old'. Imagine old guys v young guys. Ideally, if you're ttc, you should aim for 'new' sperm every 48hrs (24 hrs doesn't give them enough time to regenerate).
