I came to work today without my breast pump and it's not an option for me to go home. I will be gone for 10 hours. I have tried manually expressing in the past and it's never worked, but now I HAVE TO!

How do I manually express? Tips anyone?? :flower:

Pop to the shop and buy a hand held one? You could leave that one at work/in car just incase you forget again?

You can YouTube and watch video of hand expressing

xxxx

I use my manual hand pump all the time, as thats the only one I have.

I'm crap at manually expressing more than a few drops but my tip is you need to squeeze much higher up that you think you do. Make a c shape with thumb on top and then rest of fingers underneath and kind of push forward and down with your thumb rather than squeezing. As above poster said, youtube is pretty good :)

Or if you can't get to a shop that sells a hand held one is there anyone who could pick one up for you and bring it to your work?

And if you can't do either... You will be engorged lots so it'll almost be squirting out naturally so then it'll be easier for you to hand express :))

Oh dear! Can you view a streaming video?

Thanks for the help everyone! I tried manually expressing, and it was actually easier than I expected, I think I was never patient enough before. I don't know how many ounces I got out but it was enough to take the edge off.

I might look into getting a hand pump at lunch...

My local Rite Aid carries the Lansinoh manual pump, which is the one I have as backup for my electric. It's inexpensive and works extremely well, though it takes a bit of practice to find the best rhythm. Good luck!

Thank you SO much, I just looked this up on amazon and it gets GREAT reviews and is relatively cheap. I might go over to target and pick this up.

I'm sure it'll beat manually expressing into a ziploc bag

ETA: Nevermind, it's not sold in target stores, and rite-aid doesn't have it either :(

I love my medela harmony, I like it more than my electric one and can get more milk with it!

I have a medela harmony that I leave in my car for emergencies like that!

OMG this has happened to me before. Thank you for posting!! Now I know how to hand-express (found a video on Youtube)!

So I ended up hand expressing 12 ounces at work yesterday! This is not as much as I usually pump but I was stunned at how much I got by hand.

My son had his 4 month appt at 6:15, and I was going to pump at 5 when I got home but my cat was SO sick when I got home, I had to rush him to the vet and then go to the doctor's appt, and I didn't get to pump until 7:30. Just a horrible day!!

Oh yeah, forgot to say that I ordered the Lansinoh manual pump from Amazon so this will NEVER happen again :)

wow sending hugs to u sounds like a awful day for you i hope your cat is ok and i hope your back up pump gets to u soon xxxx

If you get really engorged, it should be pretty easy to express a little off. But don't worry too much - one day won't ruin breast feeding!!! I've done this before and always been fine. Just feed your LO then pump after. Hope that helps :flower:
