Aw, it can be tough to get it right to start with. Is there anybody you can ask to give you a helping hand getting her latch right? A midwife? Or a lactation consultant maybe? I needed some help to start with too. x

i had to have some help to get her latched on properly aswell, i've still got sore nipples even though i was apparently doing it right so i think its just something u have to go through? the MW tried telling me it shouldnt hurt at all and that it must have been because i didnt have her on right for the first day but i never changed anything i did and she said it was right so i dont know...is there no one who can watch u do it and make sure shes getting on right?

x

is there not someone you can ask like a midwife who can direct you during feeding? I struggled at first and you do have to be persistent with it as bothyou and your baby are learning how to do it remember. I found that feding is sore for the first few days, then it passed for a week or two and came back for a short burst.

Ring up your midwife, and ask if she can put you in touch with a local breast feeding support group. They will be able to help you if that is what you want. Do what makes you happy though, there is no point getting stressed out. :hugs:

thnx girls sorry forgot to mention that the nurses have been coming everyday to help me once they r here they help with latch but then my lil monkey pulls her head back and takes the end of the nipple only and i end up being sore
the one i saw yesterday advised to pump but becoz i was sore it hurt really bad
i saw another today who gave me nipple shield which was a lil better so i will try that today and see wt happens

i just feel so down at the moment and wanted to know am i the only one who cant feed her baby

I totally sympathise with you hunny. The exact same thing happened to me. The day we were released from hospital, I got home and Thomas was feeding constantly but not getting anything. My nipples were cracked and bleeding, and I could not stop crying. We got some formula in the end, and he has been on that since. But I had such guilt for weeks and weeks - I felt I should have tried harder, that I had failed etc etc. But he is happy, is growing well and seems fine. But in hindsight I wish I'd asked for help and tried to keep going. I have been told that the trick is to make sure you use nipple cream after each feed, and keep taking them off and trying to get them latched on properly - easier said than done though. I really hope you get it sorted hunny, I am so feeling for you.

You aren't the only one - read my journal in breast and bottle feeding. Good luck with the shields, they helped me a lot.

I had trouble too. Its really hard to get them to latch, that's for sure. I'd try pumping still, too, if I were you, and don't give up! I know how hard and frustrating it is, I know that I felt like a failure too.
I'm still struggling to get my supply up, but it is working up to a point. I still have to supplement somewhat, but not to the same degree I was, and my supply seems to get better everyday. I have to pump her meals, but the important thing is to me was the breast milk.
You don't sound dumb, this is more common than you think, even when you are surrounded by help.
What kind of pump did you try using? And did you get Lanolin for your nipples? It really helps alot.
And hey, in canada they can prescribe domperidone (check out canadianbreastfeedingfoundation.org) to help with your supply if you need it.
You aren't alone in this, remember. Most women I know have had trouble of some sort...

B didn't latch properly either - I found the breast sheilds really helped, as she had to latch on proberly with those. She really didn't like them - I found expressiing some milk onto/into the shield so she got a taste of the good stuff helped her get over that..
