I found out this morning that my mc on 16th feb was a chemical pg. Nurse at EPAU said a chemical pg is quite common when :bfp: comes soon after coming off bcp. She also said that it's probable that our next pg will be ok.
Just wondering what your experiences of chemical pg's are. Have any of you had recurrent chemicals? Is there anything we can do to avoid having another? Any help/comments welcome. Please be honest, no sugar coating for me please. Would rather know what to expect.
Thanks ladies. Much love.

I had my daughter Jan 05
I had a mmc Jan 07
I had a chemical Jan 08
I had a m/c Jan 09
Now am pg again due 26/10/09

Don't know what it is about Jan for me!!

The chemical I had lasted for about 3 days before the positive tests faded and then my period came. I didn't actually research it at the time, so I don't know why they happen or the chances of it happeneing again, but for me, it was just the once.

Sorry to hear about yours, good luck TTC

I'm sorry to hear that missingbubs :(

A chemical is an early MC, where you miscarry before an utrasound can pick up the pregnancy, right?

I think they are super common, I had one like that in september, my doctor was very dismissive about it, said the figure can be as high as 50% but most people don't even know about it. It was heavier & more painful than my regular AF.

I got another suspect one the next month, but AF was only 2/3 days late (& faint positives) I saw a different doctor that time who didnt even bother to put it in my notes.

I then got another, but much stronger BFP in January.

Sadly that was not meant to be either as I'm waiting to miscarry now at 11 weeks, but I'm still not daunted, I bet the next one will be perfectly normal & I'll get my lovely baby in the end.

It makes sense what your nurse told you, wish they'd told me that. Mine all occured within 6 months of coming off the BC implant so maybe it was too soon for my body to be pregnant, after 16 years of pumping in synthetic hormones?

My strategy to combat it happening again will be to get fitter. As I'm already detoxed from being pregnant for 11 weeks, I'll carry on being teetotal/non smoking/healthy eating
I may also get a panel of tests at the docs to check I'm not hiding some health problem.

Again I'm really sorry you have gone thorugh this, sweetie. Big  for you xxx

Hi Missing - I'm so sorry for your loss.
I too had a very early m/c on 19th February at 5 weeks - I was also told that it was probably a chemical pregnancy (well the GP didn't use these words exactly, but she did say it was probably a case of the fertilised egg never implanting. She also told me that chances are I would be fine next time.

So I haven't got an answer for you I'm afraid, as I'm in pretty much the same situation as you.

But I do have a couple of questions - how did you find out that yours was definitely a chemical pregnancy? My doctor would not do any tests or send me to the EPAU.

And do you know how long it was between conception and the start of the m/c for you? I'm sorry to be nosey and question you - please ignore me if you don't feel like answering! I was upset because the doctors seemed to dismiss it so easily - I know the stuff about it being very common, nothing they can do etc - but part of me wants to know if I m/c because it never implanted, or if it did implant and I m/c for another reason. If that makes sense.

Thank you for reading this, and sorry again for your loss

Yes, I did have one and the hospital made me feel like I was lying, as a scan showed nothing. Only my bloods finally told them what was going on.

I never had another experience of this however- in fact I never got another period after that experience, and i caught that eggy when i ovulated just over 3 weeks later.

Dont worry too much about it happening again though. Most people dont ever find out they've had a chemical, its just sometimes we are super early testing and finding out! It is gutting though. I hope its not long before you do get that BFP and it stays! xxxxxxxxxxx

Hey hun, i'm sorry i can't help...i just wanted to send you some

Having read your post a part of me is now wondering if my early mc was a chemical...i don't really know enough to say, and neither my GP nor the hospital mentioned a chemical at all. I wasn't on BCP before we started TTC, haven't been on any hormonal contraception for almost a year now. I started to mc at 4 weeks 3 days and had it confirmed that i had miscarried at exactly 5 weeks. It wasn't really anything like my normal AF though...it was probably nothing compared to what so many people on here have been through, i know that, but i found it pretty traumatic, and if i hadn't known i was pregnant so early on i think i would have found it pretty frightening if i hadn't known what was going on...

Sorry to hijack, a part of me still wants more info and answers as to whether this is likely to happen to me again

From what the hospital have said to you it sounds as though you have a good chance next time hun.
