Our gorgeous girl is now 4 days old, she was born on Thursday 13th June 2 days past her DD weighing 9lbs exactly!
I had an appt with MW at 3pm in the afternoon of the Thurs, I mentioned that my back had been really bad the night before and so she very kindly offered me a stretch and sweep. When she did the internal I was already 3-4cm dilated so she gave me a good sweep round and said my water was bulging and cervix very favourable.
I went home really excited, convinced something would happen that night, I sent DH to bed after I (tmi) convinced him to DTD as advised by MW! I pottered about, cleaning the kitchen and wooden floors for the 100th time, I also washed and dried my hair and set it in rollers, I know I am seriously vain lol!!
Anyway, I was having pains on and off all night which I was timing but they were very irregular and not really going anywhere so at 4.30 I decided maybe tonight wasn't the night and a bit disappointed went to bed.
DH woke up for work at 6.15 saying he was surprised it was morning and nothing was happening. He left for work and by now my other two children (12+13yrs) were up and getting ready for school. I went to the loo about 7am where I felt a huge pop and I was like OMG is that my waters??? But nothing came out so I got off the loo, walked down the stairs and GUSH they went everywhere! I immediately started having really strong contractions 5 mins apart, I called my DH and told him to come home right away which took him about 1/2 hour, by the time he got home I was kissing the kids goodbye and telling them the next time they saw me I'd have their baby sister, they were beyond excited!
All pregnancy I have been planning to give birth at the local MLU which is independent from a hospital, so I rang them and they were full! This scenario has crossed my mind many times this pregnancy as I was so desperate for a water birth, but honestly it really didn't bother me. Luckily I rand the birth suite which is attached to out local hospital and they had their one and only birth pool free. I must have sounded in established labour on the phone as the MW said she would start it running right away!
We managed to get in the car by 8am I was in so much pain I couldn't even shut the door or put a seat belt on or anything. It was really surreal as we drove down the end of the road my kids were still waiting for the school bus so I waved trying to look normal and felt really emotional for some reason!
We arrived at the hospital at 8.30am normally a 10 min journey as rush hour so I am glad I didn't go to the MLU as it's at least a 45 min drive without the traffic.
I was booked in and taken to the room examined as I was stripping off to get my bikini top on and I was 6cm. I got straight in the pool at 8.45am, which was lovely and had some gas and air. By now the contractions were coming thick and fast and I could hear my DH talking to the MW and at times I wanted to join in the conversation but I seemed to have lost the ability to speak! Very quickly the contractions became unbearable and I was sort of screaming quite loudly with them, not something I'd done in labour before but it felt really good to scream and moan! The MW asked if I was pushing and I said yes so she wanted to check baby's HB and couldn't find it, they spent a few mins trying but nothing so they told my husband to get me out the pool now, he pulled me out and I was put on the mats on the floor where I was told to push. Well I didn't need telling because the urge to push was immense, I did feel the 'ring of fire' but pushed past the pain as I knew I needed to get baby out quickly, I could sense the urgency.
She was delivered after 8 mins of pushing at 9.28am placed on my chest but she was blue, floppy and lifeless so was taken away for oxygen, I was beside myself and although my husband was telling me it was ok it was the worst feeling I've ever had. He later told me he'd never felt so panicked in all his life. Remembering hearing her cry is bringing a tear to my eye now I felt so elated when they brought her back to us. She was blue, bless her for quite a while after and started to pink up once I'd given her first breast feed.
I later found out on reading my notes, that the cord was wrapped round her neck twice and she had shoulder dystocia but when I was pushing her out I never felt like she was stuck so I'm a bit puzzled on that one.
The hospital kept us in that night as she was bringing up mucus, quite common after a very quick labour apparently. We were allowed home the following afternoon and we are loving every minute with our new addition.
