I was induced to have my son friday morning as he was diagnosed as IUGR. He was born weighing 4lb2. He's in the SCBU at my local hospital.
I have a few questions that I hope you ladies/gents may be able to help me with.

I was told yesterday morning that Riley should be able to come home yesterday, so of course got my hopes up to be bringing my little man home, only to later be told that it would be at least friday before he comes home. Cannot explain how gutted I was  but surely if they weren't sure, then they shouldn't have told me?

His SBR (jaundice levels) are below the treatment line, and have stayed below, although he is slightly yellow. This was the reason the dr said he could not come home. It has been 24 hrs and his levels have staye below. Can I ask the Dr to reassess the situation?

The only thing they want Riley to do is gain a little weight (70g) to regain his birth weight. Now he's feeding 4hrly and taking 60-70mls out of a bottle. Surely there is no reason that I cannot do this at home and have a midwife come out and check him?

Also they say because I have a daughter that they're not sure he should come home because of the germs she may pass on? Yet I can take her in there with other sick babies and that's fine.

Sorry this has turned into a bit of a rant, but hopefully someone can answer my questions.

Thanks

Hi and congratulations on your little man.

I don't really know what their reasons will be, but I would just ask questions. I pestered the nurses all the way through Sophie's NICU stay if there was anything I didn't understand and I'm sure they're used to that.

They probably just want to be 100% sure that he is ok to come home, with being so small. You could ask again about the jaundice thing - just keep asking till you get the answers you need.

I hope you get him home soon - you must have been so gutted yesterday. It's awful when you're waiting to get them home - I remember how we felt when Sophie was soooo close to coming home (I know it's a different situation as she was a 27 weeker and was in for 12 weeks) - she had to pass a sleep study before she could come home, and different people kept telling us different things about when she would be ready for the sleep study, then she failed it twice and it was just awful thinking we might get her home then having to wait even longer!

xx

hi like Katy said is so frustrating when you are told that you are getting LO home and you dont, all I can say is they really are in the best place, and when they think he is well enough to fight infection if he was to pick one up they will let him home, we had Ellie because of IUGR and lack of blood flow from placenta to baby and we were in for 8 weeks got home and then ended up back in after a day for another 2 weeks xx
