Does anyone know if high birth weight is a criteria for a scheduled c-sec?

Do you mean, is it a valid reason for C-section?

I declined one myself but yes, some providers will use a macrosomic infant (ie. "big baby") as a valid criteria for scheduled cesearean, primarily if one has a history of shoulder dystocia or other risk factors for dystocia (maternal obesity, previous incident, shoulder measures, etc...)

When we discussed my birth options, the OBGYN had a form that clearly listed suspected macrosomic infant as a factor that may be used.

It depends on the provider though - my midwife does not consider it as a factor for elective C-section, even with my history of dystocia.

Thanks - Earl had his shoulder problems, Eddy was considered high risk and they had to manoeuvre me to free him up (midwife requested theatre be readied for me and everything!), and he was nearly 11lb (10lb 14oz) and the Dr said that I would probably keep having bigger babies given the fact that I didn't have GD or any other risk factors. If we could know for certain that I would be able to ask for c-sec if I wanted one (I have managed it naturally twice now but think a 3rd may be pushing it slightly lol) then I think we'd be more likely to try for a 3rd.

If you had dystocia and 11lbs previously then I can't imagine it not being offered at least. Here, it is very hard to get an elective section (just like the UK) and it was on the table for me, I didn't have GD or any risk factors either. Worth talking to them about for sure!

I know your fear, that's part of the reason I was so terrified to TTC again, it was a hard decision and I'm still nervous about not choosing the section but if anything I don't see why it doesn't qualify under a mental health reason for section!! If a first timer can get one for fear/anxiety then I don't see why a 2nd/3rd+ timer mother can't for anxiety over a previous traumatic incident.

Isaac was 10.7 born by c section after failed induction and my consultant doesn't have any problem with me having an elective this time. BOth him and the midwife agreed with my non desire to give birth naturally to a baby that big potentially bigger this time!

I had a few factors determine me needing a C. My water didn't break, and even after broken manually, he wasn't dropping. The cord was around his neck. He ended up being 9lb 2 1/2oz he had a head too big to fit through my pelvis as well. Definitely getting another csect, even though having a girl, she could be smaller, and her skull is noticably smaller than ds' was.

My last was 10lb 3oz and delivered vaginally..when I saw consultant this week she said she would not oppose my decision to get a section due to his weigh if that was what I chose.
In the UK you can now request a section for personal reasons https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/...ght-caesarean-section-birth-dont-need-it.html so if you want one then they cant refuse you anyway..x

My baby was also 10lbs 3 oz and the midwife told me that at my 6 week check with obstetrian I should state I want a planned C-Section next time - (had an emergency C Section last time). She said that NICE guidelines mean any woman can choose a C Section.

Guidelines here: https://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/13620/57163/57163.pdf

oh yes! you no longer even need a reason, any women can choose c-section now! x

Hi!

My first LO was 9lb 2 oz and my second was 10lb 14oz and we had shoulder dystocia. No GD or any other indicator of size.

I have been strongly advised to have an elective section as there is no way to accurately predict the size of this one.

At first I was unsure, but I have been convinced that this is the best way forward for me and baby.

I am pretty sure with your previous baby weights you will be able to opt for a section if they don't already advise you to do so!

Good luck!

x
