Hi all ,

I've been trying to find info on this on the web but there is barely anything at all except a very old thread on here. My husband and I have been ttc for nearly 3 years. I have a mthfr gene mutation and pcos .. but what I need info on or success stories because I'm loosing my mind is high viscosity sperm . My DH was told on two seperate tests he has this . that was over a year ago and we still haven't had any luck. Has anyone had success with these issues or an idea how to make the sperm less thick?

Hi,

I don't know a huge amount about it, but from what I understand viscosity refers to the time taken for the sperm to change from the thick gel-like consistency which helps it stick to the cervix, into the more liquid phase whereby it can pass through the cervix and swim on up towards the egg.

A few things can cause this including dehydration and prostate problems such as inflammation or infection - and these are generally reversible.

Is the rest of his SA normal? Also, has he seen a urologist about this and what the underlying cause may be?

If you were thinking of going for IUI or IVF they can perform a procedure called sperm washing, which helps to reduce the viscosity back to normal.

Good luck x

Hey :) yeah the rest of his SA was pretty good , was really only the thickness that was an issue. I'm going to a new specialist tomorrow so I guess they will get him to do another SA to see if it's improved. We've done 2 iui where they have washed the sperm :S
