Hiya

I am thinking of doing a course an acess one if you will

To open a few doors into Teaching assitant posts

my long tearm goals are to become a Communication support worker - to assist deaf children in teaching environments. buuut

I need a level 2 sign langage which is an expensive 2 year course
and experiance

so my thought process is get the teaching assitant type course so i can get experince and afford the second course ?

Does any of this make sence ??

I may try and do the first course as a distance course..

I should have asked

has anyone done this - ie home study

or does anyone have any suggestions ?!?

Thanks for reading xxx

No idea but bumping as i would be interested in answers x

If that's the best route into the course you really want to do then i'd say go for it hun :) My SIL had to do a similar thing this year to get to do the course she wanted to do - she had to sort of take a step back and do a particular course before she could start the second course.

I have to say though that home learning is very difficult for a lot of people. I did A Level French by distance learning for about 6 months and in the end I decided to go to college and do it instead because I just wasn't getting it and I was finding it difficult to motivate myself to do regular study as opposed to doing lots of exercises all at once....

Which company were you thinking of studying with?

ics learn - i think ?? mainly as i dont know of others.....

thanks for replys x

ICS Learn is the company I did my distance learning with.

It wasn't particularly bad and the materials were pretty good (minus the occasional typo), but I did find that when I was struggling I got a lot more help at college than I did from ICS Learn. It seemed to take the tutors from ICS ages to answer me, and then i'd often have to write back to them if I didn't understand something in their answer - if that makes sense? When you're at college you can get a problem solved straightaway so that you can move onto the next bit.

It's also been really nice to get to know some of the people from my college course and we sometimes get together for a bit of a study night where we get some nibbles, do some work and then hang out and have a laugh together and it motivates me to get going whereas I dreaded doing my course when it was distance learning as I always found it quite difficult.

I'm not trying to put you off at all hun, and I think its fantastic that you're thinking of returning to education but I just thought its worth mentionning that distance learning can be difficult and lonely.

EDIT: I think I should mention that the type of course is drastically different too, and a language is probably a lot different to learn via distance than a teaching assistant course.

Are you able to do an Teaching assistant nvq at your local college? That way you will get experience and be doing the course at the same time.

im doing a course with ics learn atm, i find it hard really hard and i do struggle but i dont find them bad in anyway my tutor helps me alot so if you think youve got the dedication and time go for it but be prepared as it is not easy, i thought it was going to be and it isnt. i will say you need plently of time to sit and do theres alot of reading ect and if your like me i loose concentration reading non stop and have to read over and over to take it in. ive just had my first assignment back and only got a pass, i know as hubby keeps telling me a pass is a pass but im still a little gutted as i was so sure i would at least get a merit as i worked my butt off, so i feel crappy atm cus i cant see how i possibly could do better , i struggled enough doing it as well as i did but the tutor is sending me back my work with tips so i can try get higher, so they not to bad! not trying to put you off at all cus i dont fault them, i think you just have to really know what you will be letting yourself in for iykwim. if you want to ask anything please feel free to pm me .x.
