ok so i went to the midwives and didnt get seen for nearly 45 mins, then when i went in there she checked little mans heart beat and it was fine, then she measured him and she started to pull a funny face, then when she had finished she told me that baby is really small and that i need an emergency scan, and im to contact her straight after, i read my notes when i got home and she put that he is critically SDF which has scared the life out of me, what can happen if hes so tiny :(

oh hun, i dont know what to say. I was measuring big by mw but scan showed fine. I'd try not to worry to much though, lo could just be hiding. You hear of lots of people going into labour and having a perfectly healthy big baby and didnt even know they were pregnant so bump size cant be that important. Please try not to worry. :hugs:

Didn't wanna read and run. Try not to worry. I've read a lot about people who have gone for scans in relation to fundal height and all is okay :hugs:

try not to worry hun, the fundal height can be very inaccurate. I have always measured small and have had to have extra scans and my baby is growing fine.
I am sorry the midwife was not careful with her words and has scared you. :hugs: xx

Caitlyn never measured above 32 weeks. Always had a small bump, had 2 emergency scans and all in all she was laying back to back and was born 10 days over her due date at 7lbs 14oz! Try not to worry too much hun :hugs:

sorry to hear you have had a major fright hunni, hope all is ok, sending :hugs: to you xx

im sure he will be fine, i just worry because my sisters little bubba was critically SFD as well and she had to be in hospital for about 2 weeks :( x

try not to worry too much - the measurements are considered a good guide, but the scan will give you more information. do you know when it will be? some babies are just small, but perfectly healthy. what was the measurement, by the way?

Love the tactfullness of people at times, like she should say that and send you away without more info, try not to worry though wont do ya little one any good and they often get the measurements wrong, had one friend get sent for extra scans coz they thought the baby was massive, she was 6lb summat when born, another friend was told her baby was 7lb summat and he was nearly 11lb so not always reliable xxx

I measured small at 28 weeks... it actually showed I hadn't grown for a month. I got sent for a emergency scan and he's actually a week ahead of schedule... it's just how I'm carrying him.

Try not to worry too much xx

Stupid midwife. Do you know how many cm's you are measuring? I wouldnt worry about this too much (i know that's hard) the way the baby is lying at the time you get measured can make a difference, your stomach muscles and if you have a long torso you tend to hold the baby better. If you are all baby because you are thin you are going to measure smaller than the average. Measurements can vary, if you got 10 people to measure your tummy, you'd get different results. Also some midwives will send you off for scans at the first sign of the baby being small just to make sure whereas another midwife would just be like 'it's fine'.

I have read so many posts on here saying they have been for a growth scan and everythings fine, in fact i dont think iv ever read one where there was a problem. It depends on your height and your partners too, if neither of you are particularly tall your baby wont be big. xx

My midwife is so tactless too, what is it with them? I was measuring small hun and they were worried my baby wasnt growing properly so they sent me for 2 scans 2 weeks apart to check her growth, she is only little but is growing just fine so they werent concerned. worst case scenario they told me (if baby hadnt been growing the way she was supposed to) then they would induce early but I have read lots of similar posts on here where people were sent for emergency scans and when they get them the consultants arent concerned at all, they said I ahve to monitor babies movements really closely though so Im constantly paranoid about it!

Im sure everything will be fine and your midwife is just a dick! x

Im measuring weeks behind but they are weighing in at 31 weeks.
So there really isnt anything to worry about until you've had your scan. I was panicky at first, but im sure he will be fine :hugs:xx

She sounds awful :hugs:

I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Do you have your notes folder? Can you check what she's written in for your fundal height measurement? It could be your just 2 or 3 cms below and that means nothing with such an inaccurate way of measuring.

In fact that's why you have the scan - because they know a midwife, a measuring tape and a stomach is a pretty inaccurate guide to the size of the baby.

Do you have a personalised fundal growth chart? A lot of hospitals don't seem to use one so it;s just a cm per week used as the guide.

I have a personalised one for my height and weight. On Monday at 31 wks I was only measuring 29cms. In another hospital that may be considered small and with a different technique of measuring the midwife may have got 28cms and referred me for a scan. But on my chart 29 cms was basically perfect for 31 weeks.

Look at it this way - because of a horrible midwife you get an extra free scan!

Just don't worry until you have the scan.

i don't think midwives measurements are very accurate. i mean, all they do is feel around your belly and pull out a tape measure! i don't get worked up about fundal height. let us all know, but I bet she's wrong! good luck at your appt.

Please don't worry. Even if your baby is classed as "small" we are talking small over averages here....small for guidelines that people make up from lots of figures which vary from what we might consider small to what we might consider big.

My nan could only ever carry babies who weighed 3-4lbs and all were still healthy at term and grew to be normal and sometimes very tall adults.

Its not fair to make you worry any more than you already are! Sending you my support and hugs :hugs: x

meh fundal height measuring its crapola 2bh hardly is it ever percise... i measured small then all of a sudden big then dead on :/ so i wouldnt worry too much huni im sure all will be fine xxx

stupid woman !! my best friend measured 17cm at 28 weeks her baby was fine 7lb at birth she just carried her bump really small x x
