How do you determine if theyre hungry or not?

With Ethan he eats fairly regularly although it does vary sometimes. So if he starts crying and he hasn't eaten for 2.5 / 3 hours I know that's more thank likely the cause. If i'm not sure (sometimes he surprises us by being hungry again 1.5 or 2 hours later!) he has a particular cry - kind of an urgent cry, definately not a grumbly cry. if you don't feed him it turns into a proper "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" at the top of his lungs, goes bright red etc and gets into a real temper! Give him a bottle and he's instantly quiet!

oops forgot to add - if I've got it wrong and he's not hungry he clamps his mouth shut, pushes the bottle away and shakes his head so you can't get it in! then I have to go through the checklist of nappy, bored, uncomfortable, tired etc....

Grace chomps on her tongue when she's hungry and has a totally different cry when she's starving :winkwink: She goes about 4 hours between feeds, so if it's about 3 and a half hours or more then she's usually hungry. She has a more urgent cry than when she's tired, that's more of a whimper and if she's got a dirty nappy then that too is a whimper. She's quite predictable.

it depended with Hannah. Usually she was somewhat scheduled so I'd go by that. But if she was grizzly and wouldn't settle and I knew her diaper was clean I'd try feeding her

My HV said when a baby is hungry absolutely nothing (dummy, putting her down change of scene, change of nappy) will comfort her.

archie shouts if hes hungry and if i leave him he goes into a full on screeching wail

brianna's on somewhat of a schedule that she's set herself on so i go by that. But she also has this ear piercing scream if I haven't gotten it to her in a timely manner :dohh:

Euan chews his hands! Or if he's sleeping he starts rooting - normally does that if we are out for a walk and it is getting near feeding time.

chewy fingers or tha loud screeching cry. khy has to crys you see, the winging ''some one give me some attention'' cry and the loud screechin ears hurting glass breaking im hungry/change me/im tierd cry. the loud one can start and stop INSTANTLY  its scary sometimes

Ollie goes at least 3 hours between feeds and chews his fists or just starts sucking nothing. Also if he is before 3 hours he has a distinct cry,its very loud and urgent, and nothing will settle him down. Take care :hugs: xx

maddi has had a routine since a month or so, so i no by the time, but i've also always gone on a certain cry, when she starts chewing her hands, and when she is still unsettled even though she is clean, dry, no wind etc x

In the early days Joseph would turn his head to breastfeed, didn't matter that when we were breastfeeding he hated it, he still did the action. It didn't matter who was holding him either.

Now he chews on his hands or screams the house down. Nothing else will comfort him, if he's hungry he will let me know. He doesn't really cry for any other reason.

He's also very good at sticking to a four hour feed routine in the day but sometimes he gets hungry early so any fussing in the hour before a feed is due is usually a big sign that he's ready a bit early.
