Morning ladies,

My lo has his second ever cold and it's a bad one! The problem is that I've only ever given calpol via a syringe before and last night he just wouldn't take it. Kept pushing it away and screaming. When we tipped him back a bit and squirted some in his mouth he completely lost it. Screamed like I've never seen him scream before. Poor thing. It was horrible.

He's still full of cold today and has 2 molars cutting through, so I'd like to try and give him more calpol today. He's refusing a spoon - just pushing it away.

Any creative ideas as to how to give it?

Thanks in advance.

You could try mixing it into a yoghurt or something. I've used that trick to get medicine down Harvey before and it worked.

Hope he's better soon.

Of course!:dohh: Didn't even think of that.

So is it just as effective if mixed in food?

it's probably not the best idea, but giving them it while sleeping works. only a tiny bit at a time though.

last resort of course!

Miss E sucks it from the sachets... Spoon and syringe just caused tears and lots of mess. Hope your little one feels better soon.xx

How would you do that? Via a spoon? Do they swallow it then? Gosh. Never knew that could work... Thanks.

I've often given DD medicine while asleep, she'll suck it out of the syringe. It probably helps that she used to drink all her bottles in her sleep :)
During the day she'll usually take it from a syringe or a spoon, but if she's getting stroppy about it I use a syringe, lay her on a pillow and hold her cheeks then into the side of the mouth a bit at a time.

yeah, i use a syringe. like Alias she used to take her bottles sleeping.

i dont do it very often cos she's pretty good at taking it usually but if i have to i will.

I use a syringe too but make sure it's squirted to the side of the mouth / cheek otherwise I worry she might inhale some or something. She is usually good at taking her medicine so its not normally an issue so I let her have a cuddly and a cry if I have to 'force' it - and let her know Mummy is being cruel to be kind!

Generally the drugs-while-sleeping happens at night, when she's got an infection (4 in the last 2 months). She'll start grumbling 6 hours after her bedtime dose, so we get up, calpol her in her sleep, and go back to bed :) Otherwise she's up about an hour later, for about an hour waiting for the drugs to kick in!

We've done this a number of times if mine have ever need nurafen. We tended to use a syringe rather than a spoon.

I would check if you can give it mixed in with food. I know that some medicines you shouldn't give with food at all but not sure with calpol as only used it once.

Thomas loves Calpol so I don't have this problem! He will even lick the spoon for me, LOL.

we mainly use a suringe but they will take it off a spoon too

When she was teeny we bought a medicine dummy. You pop the dose into a cap on the outside of the dummy and they suck it out. She choked on syringes and spoons as she stressed out.

Giving paracetomol with a bit of yogurt will be fine. There are not many meds that shoudnt be given with food. Many medicines have to be given with food. At work (im a nurse) i have to give regular meds via nasogastric or gastrostomy tube. I have to give meds in between feeds (so drug and food mix together). No different and no problems.

Best to get LO used to takings meds from a spoon or syringe though. If tots are so unwell they wont even eat you dont want to face the problem of how to give the meds again!

I used to squirt the medicine into a bottle teet and get her to suck on that, was just before a bottle so although she got stroppy that we tricked her, she did still get a milk bottle after.
