Hey guys. LO had her 4 month checkup this morning...she weighed in at 11 pounds. I am thrilled with her gain, the dr did not seem at all concerned, but she is only 2nd percentile on the chart. She used to be 5th.

What exactly is a percentile anyway? I think it means a range of normal baby statistics, so I gather LO is almost abnormally small maybe? She seems OK to me but alot of 4 month olds weigh more. Is that basically what the chart is about? A normalcy range?

She is 98th for length.

How much did your 4 month old weigh?

The centiles mean that if you lined up 100 children of that age in order (of height, weight etc) then your child would be whatever centile number in the line up. Eg for weight your dd would be no 2 for height she would be no 98. Hope this helps x

Just a rank of all the babies they measured in the study, so your LO would be top 2% for height and bottom 2% for weight, she's going to be a model. :D

They have cut offs at which point they will start to worry, but I believe it's way below 1%ile.

My boy is 70% on weight and 90% for height, he's a long baby as well.

I have no idea how OH (close to 400 pounds) and me (179 pre baby, 200ish now) made a tall skinny baby. :haha:
She has to fluff up at some point here!

My friends son was born at the weight Lily is now.

Yours is long and lean, mine is short and fat. All normal!

My daughter was born not that far off from it too. She was over the centile chart for weight (haven't had her weighed in a while) and 99.6th centile for height. She was a tall fat baby haha, now she's slimmed down so she's a tall not fat/not skinny baby. All babies are perfectly fine though, as long as it doesn't affect their health and the doctor/health visitor isn't concerned then whatever centile is fine. My friends daughter was below the centile line for weight for a while as she just wasn't putting on weight but she's a happy healthy baby so no concern xx

Kylie was 12 pounds. Your LO sounds completely fine :)

I think so too. Her size (mostly for length) in clothes correlates with her age, she is juuuust getting out of 0 to 3 footie outfits, and needs a 3 to 6 for the length, separates still a 0 to 3 though. So I was shocked she "scored" so low on the percentile chart, and that she went down from 5th to 2nd. I thought she would have been a higher number as she has gotten so much bigger. I guess I wasn't thinking about how it truly works. It's not that big of a deal, just a number.

My DS was 16 lbs 1 oz at his 4 month appointment (birth weight was 8 lbs 7 oz). My doctor called him a tank. :)

Jonathans gigantic. At 10 weeks he weighed 14 pounds. I find out in tuesday how much he weighs!!

Awh....that's mean. Lol. OH's brother's daughter is built like that. She is 2 1/2 and looks about 4, a chubby 4. TANK does come to mind but I would never say it.

WOW! I bet you have great arm muscles from carrying him around!!!

Haha, it's ok. We had a bit of a struggle to get him to eat when he was born, so we were happy to see him put on weight. He was weighed yesterday at his 6 month appointment and he's now 18 lbs 14 oz.

Lol!!!! For the first 12 weeks of his life he ate sooo much! Hes really slowed down now and is actually quite difficult to feed since hes always so distracted! So im really curious to know how much he weighs. I was worried he had gained way to much. He doubled his birth weight in 10 weeks! He was born 4 weeks early same as your lo.

Lo is 17 wks and 19lbs so 95th centile for weight! In 6-9mth everything, but lengthwise 6-9 is spot on too.

I always get, aww, how old? 17 wks. Cue raised eyebrows, oooh, he's big isn't he?!?!?!

Sol is almost 5 months and 9lbs 11.5 oz, he is still in newborn clothes. She sounds like she is doing wonderfully, you just have a long slender baby :)

Just a quick point, I don't know where in the world you are nor how you feed lo, but the old charts were based on ff babies and were no good for bf (underestimated). In the UK the WHO charts are used which are better.
Either way your lo is entirely normal. The idea is they follow the curve, whichever they happen to be on. That ensures lo is gaining appropriate weight. A fluctuation of a few % either way is fine as babies put on weight in chunks, not smoothly which is why they recommend weighing only monthly here once the birth weight has been regained.
I also have a banana baby! He's beginning to fill out now at 9 weeks and is already in 3-6 babygros for length. Maybe they'll meet at a basketball match one day!

My LO just had his 17 week weigh in. He is 13lb1 which is about 9-15th percentile I think. He was born at 0.4th percentile. Anything less than this and they will worry so you bubs is absolutely fine.

However his height is still about 2nd percentile so is short and a little chubby.

I'm sick of people asking if he is a newborn - he might be small but he is 4 months, sitting up and playing with his toys .....newborns don't do that!!

My lo is 18 weeks and weighed 13lb10 on wednesday! His weight gain stopped even tho he was having 7oz e ery 3 hours and his eczema got bad too so they think he has a milk allergy and hes on neocate now! :) I hope it helps! :)

We have the opposite problem! OH and I are both thin and short... Me being only 4'11 and 100lb pre pregnancy...

Our baby was born full term and on the smallish side of 6lbs 1oz....at her 10w check up, she weighed 12lb 10oz, 90th percentile!

She's already in size 6-9months.

I have no idea how we produced such a chunky little monkey!

And when she's hungry, she's starving! As soon as she wakes, she'll scream down the house until she gets a bottle in her mouth!
