I've been reading about not to over eat etc etc. That we need just 300 more calories a day now we're pregnant. I've been pretty much giving baby whatever he/she demands....is it the right amount I wonder?

Is anyone a nutitionalist here???

Yesterday was pretty standard:

Breakfast: 1 cheese roll. Lunch: Tuna Sandwich (my weekly tuna treat) with side salad. Dinner: Beef casserole with crusty bread (OK; I did have a small second helping..) then apple pie. Snacks throughout the day: 1 mars bar (a special treat!...) 2 slices of french baguette with butter, 3 squares of dark chocolate

Today so far:
Breakfast: fruit n fibre cereal, 2 slices of toast n marmite, then fruit salad (I was ravenous!). Lunch will be: pasta and side salad Dinner: mash and sausages (prob 3...) and maybe more apple pie or fruit salad (if I'm good!) and maybe a square or two of choc while I watch eastenders...

is it too much? I really dont know...I mean, I'm hungry so I should eat...right?...

this is what i have on an average day.
breakfast: bowl of bran flakes with milk and a sprinkle of sugar,
lunch: sandwich(usually cheese) and a packet of crisps.
dinner: some kind of meat with about 4 or 5 different veg and gravey.
after dinner: 2 slices of toast or a bowl of cereal.

i have found that since i have been pregnant i cant eat a full meal.
when i have a sandwich for lunch i find myself struggling to eat all of the sandwich.

i find i wake up really really hungry, i had four pieces of toast this morning two with peanut butter and jam and two with cheese and jam. plus a few wafer biscuits. for lunch i usually have pasta, or an egg on toast, or melted cheese on toast atleast two pieces. dinner last night i had two helpings on onion soup and 2 pancakes!

I'm done nutrition in my degree at University. In the nutritional guidelines for pregnant women, it states that we do not to consume anymore calories than normal in the first and second trimester and it is only in the third trimester that we need an extra 300 calories a day, because this is when the baby starts gaining weight.

It states that it is because of this reason and women eating too many calories during their whole pregnancy, that some pregnant women get so big and find it hard to lose afterwards.

Admittedly I have been eating healthy and not "eating for 2" as much as I would like, but at the same time I find this very hard to believe because if I do not constantly eat throughout the day I become very weak and feel ill.

I think its different for everybody, some women will need more calories than other women when pregnant and you should be judging if your eating too much by your weight gain:

We are meant to gain an average of a pound (lb) each week in the second tri. xxx

a pound a week...so thats about a kilo every 2 weeks? 2 kilos ish a month? OK, I'm seeing doc next week, judgement day!!

Yeah thats about 1/2kilo a week or like you said a kilo every two weeks. Some weeks it may be more and some weeks it may be less. So don't worry too much unless you but on like 5 kilos in a week  xx

If i'm hungry then i eat, stuff it!

I never used to feel hungry all the time so it must be because the baby or my body needs it.

hurrah! I agree. I mean, i only eat when i'm hungry...not bored or just for the hell of it. it seems almost cruel to not eat when I am hungry...who am I to deprave a baby of food?...and the ocasional mars.....:happydance:

yeah, i am eating when i am hungry not just for the sake of it (although i had a cadburys cream egg for the hell of it yesterday!).

But i'm finding i am hungry more and that must be for a reason so i am just going to feed it!

 I won't tell you what I eat because it's more than that and not as healthy  But I do eat whenever hungry.

I seemed to be more hungry in the first trimester than I am now. There were days when I would wake up cos my tummy was rumbling and I would eat a banana when I got up, just so that I could think straight and decide what I wanted for brekky. Then as soon as I got to work I´d eat something, usually a bretzel or a bread roll, then eat an apple, then have lunch etc etc and so it would go on throughout the day. My desk looked like a picnic table at times.

The last couple of weeks though, I´ve not been as hungry and can go a good couple of hours without having to stuff my face! At the mo, I´ve got the lergy so can´t taste much anyway. I had two slices of toast with nutella for breakfast and then a pitta bread with salad, cheese, turkey and beetroot for lunch and thats all today. I´ve just forced myself to eat a banana, cos I realised I´d not eaten that much.

I didn't really eat a whole lot during my first trimester, I felt nausea all the time. Of course the only thing that sounded good was fast food (that means unecessary calories). Now that I am in the 2nd trimester, it seems like I am hungry all the time and all I think about is food. For breakfst today I had a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats w/ skim milk, I brought 2 pieces of cheese for a snack, for lunch is a Lean Cuisine spagehetti and a 100 calorie bag of kettle korn. Not sure what I am having for dinner, maybe grilled ham and cheese (don't feel like cooking tonight). Hopefully I don't buy anything out of the snack machine at work. I noticed that my eating was getting out of control so now I'm trying to be healthier and not eat as much fast food.

If you're hungry, by all means eat. Try to stay as healthy as possible and not eat junk (which I am trying to learn still, lol!! ). Eat fruits and veggies. Ever since I got pregnant, I had this evil person telling me that it's okay to drink pop and eat as much as I want. Don't listen to the evil person, they're bad. Good luck...
