A question for those that have had infertility testing done...

I'm going on 14 months of TTC. We think we're going to try 1 more time on our own and if it doesn't work we will arrange an appointment with a fertility specialist.

I know our insurance covers up to 6 IVF treatments. I don't know how much they cover (if anything at all) for all the testing that comes first.

So for those that had their hormones tested, other blood work, HSG, saline ultrasound, etc.... how much did those things cost you? How much testing did your husbands/partners do? We want to have an idea of what we're getting ourselves into.

What we've already done:

My husband has done a semen analysis. His count was 137.5 million/ml. Volume 1.5 ml. 64% motility. 40% morphology (normal sperm). Other than low volume he seems pretty normal.

I have had blood work for my thyroid and that was all normal. I've had a transvaginal ultrasound. Ovaries and uterus appear normal. I ovulate on my own, but do have some longer cycles ~ 40days, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. For the last 3 cycles I've regulated and shortened my cycle to around 30-34 days with soy isoflavones. I chart my BBT, and have a normal length luteal phase.

At this point in our lives we are probably the healthiest we have ever been. And we're really stumped and definitely need some testing done to get to the bottom of whatever is keeping us from conceiving.

Im interested in this myself since we have hit 6 month and are over 35. Unfortunately, my hubby switched jobs and we dont have insurance for some months :( Best of luck to you

Hi there,

It sounds like you have a really really good insurances. Especially if they fully covered 6 IVF treatments. I'd check with your insurance company though. But for my insurance (I live in California), all my blood tests and HSG are covered. I think for the HSG I only had to pay $15. SA is also covered. IVF is not covered and that cost $10k plus $2550 for ICSI and Assisted Hatching. That price does not include doctor's visit and medication. Medication can cost approximately $3k (not sure yet since we haven't started). Doctor's visit is covered half by my insurance so we pay $105 for every visit. Hubby needs to go through another SA for Kruger's Strict Morphology testing to determine whether or not we need to do ICSI and we are not sure how much that will cost.

I'd also check with your insurance the difference between the OB and RE. They have two different pricing. Things that your OB and GP can do for you for free, they'd charge an arm and a leg if you do the same test through your RE. Your insurance company can definitely give you a list on what's covered and what's not.

Some of the blood tests that I had (so far totaling about 16 vials of blood) is FSH, Cholesterol, hepatitis, Vitamin D, hemoglobin electrophoresis, STD test panel, white blood cell, complete blood count, estradiol, treponema, cytomegaloviros, TSH, prolactin, blood type, varicella zoster, rubela screen, and a few more that I can't remember. I think your husband would need to go through a couple of blood tests also but I can't remember what since my husband already done his a long time ago for work.

Hopefully that helps a bit. I don't think you'd have to pay much at all considering that the IVF is covered by your insurance. Hopefully you won't have to go through that. Good luck!

I can only speak from my experience, but my insurance covers 6 ivfs too and they covered EVERYTHING...all of the testing, including the hsg (to look for tube blockages. The single only thing they didn't cover was to freeze leftover embryos, we paid cash for that from my clinic ($540)
