How much folic acid are you taking?

In the US prenatal vitamins have 800mcg here it's only 400.

So what I'm doing is taking my prenatal with breakfast and then a folic acid 400 with dinner.

I take Rainbow light that has 800 mcg of Folic acid. I did read that 400 mcg is the minimum recommended. Even though I get 800 I'm still thinking of getting an extra dose, its supposedly like Vitamin C you can't overdose on it, your body will take what it needs and get rid of the rest.

Yeah, I also read that you can't keep it stored in your body, so I think that the extra 400 will be fine.

I don't know why the UK only suggest 400, but I figure there are plenty of healthy American babies born every year, so I'm going for 800! :)

My Reproductive Endocrinologist found that I have one copy of the MTHFR mutation and says because of it I need extra folic acid. So I take Folgard 2.2 which has 2.2 mg (2200 mcg) of folic acid, plus the amount in my prenatal vitamin.

Hi

I am on a prescribed dose of 5mg of Folic Acid instead of the recommended of 0.4mg.

One of the other supplements I take has folic acid in it also, my attitude is that you can't have too much

I take my prenatal with it and one extra pill, I am not sure of the dosage though but my ob said to take the extra because it won't hurt.

Not sure if you are still around and will read this or not, but high doses of folic acid isn't recommended for those of us with MTHFR mutations. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. Folic acid is a synthetic unlike folate. Our bodies aren't designed to process synthetics the way we can process the version nature produces. In fact we can only process 50% of the synthetic vitamins. Add in MTHFR mutations and we can process even less. Synthetic folic acid has been correlated with a rise in cancer. A friend of mine was found to have precancerous cells during a pap after a miscarriage in which she was taking high doses of folic acid.

What you should be taking is the bio active form which is L-methylfolate. This doesn't need to be broken down by our bodies in order for us to use it, unlike folic acid. L-methylfolate is already in the form that we can use. MTHFR.net and www.MTHFRsupport.com have a ton of fantastic information. If you want more information about synthetic vs natural, just do a google search on "natural vs synthetic folic acid".

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I'm taking a total of 5mg of L-methylfolate - 3mg from Metanx, 1mg from my prenatal (Thorne Basics), and 1mg additional.
