Hi girls
Have a question I hope someone can help with. I have been referred for an hsg and need to ring up on day 1 of my cycle to book an appointment within 10 days. They told me that day 1 is from first sight of blood, so includes pink tinged cm. thing is, I spot 2 days before af, bleed for 3 days and spot for 2 after so that's 7 days of bleed in total. Hospital can only do hsg on a tues morning!!!!! So my windows tight. I'm wondering though, I thought day 1 is full flow or at least red spot, the receptionist said otherwise. What to do?

I'd phone them now and ask for clarification, tbh. I've always been told that day 1 is full, red flow!

Mmm I found in my years of STC to NOT listen to receptionist or even nurses in some cases! I had the same Hsg last summer and day 1 is definitly full blown af flow! MAybe call to clarify with a Dr, but I've never heard of spotting as days 1, heck even fertility friend wont put spotting as CD 1. Good Luck :D

Hi ladies

Thank you for responding. I called up a private hospital to find out more about when to do an hsg and to ask for the cost of it if I decide to go private. I got through to the xray dept and they told me the same thing- spotting counts as day 1. I called the NHS hospital twice and the second time the receptionist asked the consultant and told me the same thing. TBH, I don't get it. The main reason is to ensure that I am not pregnant and haven't ovulated. I do not tend to get a positive OPK until CD15. But I do not want to go against hospital advice of course.

Right now I am debating whether to wait it out on the NHS or to go provate and pay £450. I can afford it but I would rather put that towards treatment than diagnostics. I cannot get any treatment (meds, iui or ivf) on the nhs and need to save every penny for that and for raising my future baby.

Wow...that actually surprises me! Maybe its because they absolutly dont want u pregnant and count the spotting as cd1 only for HSG and not for normal cycle thing (that would be heavy flow)!

You know your own body better than faceless doctors. I count day 1 as when I had both cramps & full flow. I feel a rant coming on here as to how YOU have to fit YHEIR schedule when the hospital is there for patients and not vice versa.

Surely full flow is safer to say you're def not pregnant? As you can still spot and be pregnant? Maybe they just want to make sure it's before ovulation? Either way it makes me angry that you are having to worry about this. And as precious reply said, receptionists and nurses often believe they have superior knowledge. I attended a nurse led clinic with the most arrogant nurse ever, she went in a mood with us because we didn't bring ID with us. She also told us off for having bmi over 25 lol.

Yeah, the whole NHS thing is just a big pain in the behind. Either way, whether spotting or full flow is day 1, the dates are such that I wont be getting an HSG this month on the NHS. I will wait until next month and if still nothing, I think i will go private.

How did you both find the whole HSG experience?

I havent had mines yet, seeing fs on 8th to see if she def wants it. Researched it on here and told it's uncomfortable, bit no general anaesthetic so that's good eh? Plus I seem to read a lot about it unblockIng tubes on the process and pregnancies happening the cycle after it.

Fingers crossed you get your bfp in next month then and you won't need hsg xxx

Thanks just married! Back at ya!

They'll most likely make you do a pregnancy test regardless of spotting, full flow, whatever. Apparently my hospital accidentally irradiated someone's foetus after the lady swore to them that she definitely wasn't pregnant...she was, they did the HSG and voila, baby showed up on the pictures. So even though I'd just had the period from hell, I still had to do the test.

Both my FS and the x-ray dept said day 1 was first day of red flow, and they only do the HSG between days 5-10. They'll do it if you're spotting but not if you're still bleeding.

As for the actual experience, the procedure itself was uncomfortable and hurt a few times, but nothing unbearable. I was quite unwell for about 48 hours afterwards but think it was a reaction to the painkillers I took rather than the procedure, mostly.

Good luck with it. If it's possible for you to get it on the NHS, I'd advise that, as actual IVF, etc, is very, very expensive so it's worth saving your pennies!

Thanks blue eyed, good luck with your next appointment.
