my health visitor told me today to swap my baby to hugry baby milk instead of just upping an ounce because i mentioned shes draining a few of her 5oz bottles and she thinks 6oz is too much for her age. LO is six weeks old and having 4-5oz every four hours and still having regular night feeds. id say she only drains about once bottle a day.
personally i dont think she needs hungry baby milk and thought it was for older babys not quite ready for weaning?
just wondering when and why you swapped you baby to hungry milk and what your opinions are on it, thanks!

I think that's weird advice! From what I know of it (admittedly very little) there is no nutritional/calorie difference between first milk and hungry baby milk - the difference is something to do with the ratio of proteins and it's designed to make the baby feel fuller for longer. At such a young age I would not want this to happen and I'd want to know just how hungry my baby is and feed as and when she wants. Hope that helps!

I moved my son onto hungry baby milk at 3 weeks old. He was a small baby and could only manage around 2oz at most feeds so was constantly feeding. I will do the same with this baby. If they are taking all the milk they want from the feed but seem to be getting hungry again quicker than normal i will swap upto hungry baby milk. I also started adding 1 small baby spoon of baby rice into his milk from 4 weeks for his night time bottle.

ITs all about what works best for your baby. Nobody can really tell you as every baby is different. BUT just so you know.. i dont think 6oz is too much for a 6 week old.. my nephew was taking upto 8oz every feed at that age.... he was a big baby 10lb when born xx

Strange, my doctor just told me to up the amount as and when required, they physically can't take too much as they'll just bring back what they don't want. TJ was on exactly the same amount at your LOs age. Don't worry too much. It takes a while to find your groove with it but you'll get it. I personally don't like hungry baby formula it doesnt agree with TJ, but like PPs have said do what YOU feel is best for the both of you. Xx

i upped my babys ounces hungry baby made my baby constipated wasnt nice at all, and it the end i started introduceing rusks at tea time and she settled really well at bed time

i agree with sethsmummy no1 can tell youwhat you can or cant do they can only give advice but its up to you to take it do whats best for both of you xxx

That's barmy advice.! My lo was on 5/6 ounces at that stage..

thanks girls x
iv already decided not to swap her to hungry baby. when she starts draining a few more of her bottles il just up her to 6oz.
i knew i wadsnt going mad thinking it was strange advice x

Just up her milk. It's completely normal for babies to feed often and drink what seems like a lot of milk but bear in mind how much developing they are doing and milk is the only thing providing the fuel to do that.

I never limited Rivers milk intake if she drank it she needed it

i meant to say aswell hun not all milks have a "hungry baby" milk depending on which brand you use. The milk my sister used had only 3 stages, stage 1 was from birth... stage 2 was from 6 months and stage 3 was 1year plus.

Cow and Gate like i used and will again does have the hungry milk.

A little help for changing babies milk also... when you change babies milk to the next stage... Do 1 bottle the milk you were on then 1 bottle the new milk and keep going like that for 2 days, then do it 1 old milk to 2 new milk and gradually faze out the old one. Lets their tummy get used to the new milk and can sometimes avoid constipation xx

my health visitor specifically told me hungry baby milk is for babies who are 4 month plus and ready to be weaned.

saying that my baby was having firm poos and she told me to put her on comfort milk, but my gut feeling was not to. im glad i didnt as her poos softened the following week.

i would just up the amount of milk! differently babies drink different amounts!

My LO is on 3-6 oz bottles every 3 hours aswell as during the night, sometimes he even wakes up an hour and half after a feed for a 1-3ounce top up.
My health visitor didn't say anything about changing milk, or even mentioning that it was too much for him and he's 3weeks 3 days old x

I only swapped to it at about 4/5 months when she was draining 8oz bottles, and then draining full 9oz bottles but wasn't ready for solids yet (still had her tongue reflex, was still wobblier than I'd like sitting up even with her prematurity accounted for) - she'd climbed centiles in a fairly dramatic spike as well. It basically bought us the best part of another month for her development to catch up with her appetite.
