My gorgeous little one arrived into the world on 23/12/13 at 6.23AM, weighing 7llbs11oz, after induction beginning 7.30AM the previous day.
I arrived at the hospital and had my remaining waters broken before being out straight onto a drip to kick start my contractions. At this point I was receiving 6mg per hour of the drug.
I laboured well with the drug, and though admittedly it did make me drowsy and disorientated, managed the pain, coping with simply paracetamol and a birthing ball.
My midwife was whacking up my dosage of the inducing drug every so often to regulate and strengthen my contractions; however, six hours in, I was only 4cm dilated, baring in mind I was 3cm when I arrived.
It was at that point my midwife recommended I have some pain relief as she said by this point my contractions because they were the same intensity as those at 10cm during a natural birth. She suggested I have some pain relief so as I could get some sleep as she said I would contract very slowly and could be in labour for another ten hours or so.
I had an epidural because I thought if I'm going to attempt to ease the pain, I may as well get rid of it - (I'm not saying this to scare anyone, the pain was totally bare able and I could have continued if I was further dilated). For me, the epidural was a horrible mistake. The anaesthetist to begin with burst membranes in my back when attempting to insert the epidural, so I lost a lot of blood; enough to soak through two pillows. Although it worked and provided relief for a while, after about two hours, it stopped working on one side of my body, meaning throughout my left side I could feel every contraction and pain. Needless to say, they couldn't work out why this was, so they panicked and turned it off.
After 15 hours, I was just about to be taken for a section as I wasn't progressing, though just at that point I announced I wanted to push. I was miraculously 10cn dilated (the drip was feeding m e 68mg each hour, as opposed to 6.).
I pushed for half an hour, and eventually, brought into my arms my beautiful baby, without even gas and air. I experienced 2nd degree tearing, and required stitches after birth, for which I was given an injection of local anaesthetic.
I couldn't be a prouder mummy, and can't put him down.
Good luck to all mummies to be! Trust me, the pain is bearable!
