We started hypnobirthing yesterday. Fantastic. Love it!

I can't quite get my head round the actual contractions though and I wasn't quite sure the teacher gave me the right answer.

Why do period pains hurt even if you're not stressed about them etc etc. presumably they are just a contraction of the uterus...?

She said that it's a different system used by the menstrual cycle, and totally different to birth. I can't quite get my head around that? And I've been googling this morning and can't find anything about them using a different system.

Does anyone know?

Rather than it being a different 'system' I would imagine it to be a different sort of 'contraction' since it is for different purposes. During birth they are being used to thin and open the cervix plus nudging the baby down.

The most important thing with the hypnobirthing is to focus on being relaxed rather than being tense imo xx

Thanks :)

I am so totally on board with the hypnobirthing principals... But you know how you just hesitate because of one thing which doesn't quite make sense in your mind?

I have only read the hypnobirthing book, but some of the things were just unbelievable and irritating to me.
However having been through a mostly drug free labour, principles of breathing and relaxation are absolutely key in minimising discomfort. I just couldn't reach a level where I could relax and breathe calmly, and that last cm almost killed me.

So I think if you can, just accept that the techniques will definitely help you cope, easier said than done i know. Especially if just one little thing is niggling at you.
