Has anyone had one? I'm just wondering how horrific it is? I had appointment yesterday and they're booking me in for one. Doctor said they inject you; I assumed it was in the arm, but no, of course it's not, of course it has so be up inside me, where would the fun be otherwise?!?
Have to say I am so fed up of blood tests and things shoved up me, and everything else. All hubby's had to do is have a wank in a pot!! And I even helped with that!! Argh!!

I was really anxious about my HSG, but was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was.
You lie on the Xray table, with the Xray machine pointed above your uterus.
Otherwise it's a bit similar to having a smear test. They put in the speculum and then with a thin tube which is passed through the cervix, (which I couldn't feel) they inject the fluid into the uterus and take Xray pictures to see if the fluid is flowing through the tubes. I was able to watch the images as they happened as they had a tv screen positioned for me to do so.
It became slightly crampy when looking at my second tube as they had to squirt a bit more fluid than usual into the uterus in order to get the images, but it was like period pain and only lasted for a few seconds.
You have some really horrible sticky discharge afterwards though as the fluid comes out so make sure you take some absorbent pads with you.
Good luck and hope it all goes well.

It's not so bad! Mine was unusually tough due to my backwards uterus and cervical position but it's worth it to know if your tubes are clear! It's only a few second of discomfort if any at all

Mine was pretty easy as well. Fx4babydust did a great explanation of the whole process. Honestly I hardly felt anything besides some mild cramping near the end. They tell you to take some pain relievers about 30min before the test and thats really all you need. But yes, they usually provide a pad if you dont bring one, but I would bring one just in case. It does leak out for quite a bit afterwards.
I've heard plenty of horror stories but in all honesty I thought it was one of the easiest tests i've done so far.

red_head, I don't mean to scare you at all - the other posters above did a good job describing what happens - but I just wanted to add that for some women it is quite painful, albeit very brief!! I think it really depends on your body. I personally have endometriosis and very painful menstrual cramps, so for me the HSG felt like the worst moments of the worst menstrual cramps I've ever felt in my life for a few minutes straight - and those minutes were pretty awful - but the whole thing came to an end rather quickly and then it was all over. I just had mild cramping for the rest of the day and evening. I hope your experience is not that bad but just wanted to give another experience. Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses; sorry it took a while for me to reply! I'm booked in for Friday! Hopefully it'll be fine! I am worried I might have endo which I'm guessing will show up on the scan, but fingers crossed it all goes okay :) thank you all x

Mine wasn't bad at all either, and I was extremely nervous. It is just like a smear that takes a little longer. The only thing I felt was the speculum just like the pap smear. I didn't feel the catheter or anything at all. I didn't get a single cramp. It wasn't bad at all. I did take Ibuprofen 30 mins before, so that might have helped me not feel any cramps.

Thanks all :) I'm actually pretty excited about it, as I've been readings about how for a lot of women it can make them super fertile and there are a lot of bfp's in the three months following! Did any of you get a BFP after? Also, I quite want my husband in there to see it; is that allowed? Just because this is his journey too, and he's been there for all the other stuff.

Did any of you get a BFP after

In response to your question, I got a BFP the cycle after my HSG (currently 13DPO). I'd gotten 3 BFPs in the 4 months before the HSG so I'm not sure how connected the two were for me, but I can say that the previous 3 were all faint BFPs which ended, while this one seems more sticky. Time will tell. I wonder if maybe the HSG "cleared up" my tubes and helped implantation happen sooner?? No idea if that is true however. Good luck to you!! Hope it helps!!

red_head, how did your HSG go and what were next steps advised? I hope everything was all clear for you! Did they let your husband in? When i had mine they wouldn't let him in but brought him in right after to view the results.

I had my first HSG yesterday. I was pretty nervous, but it went very well. It was somewhat painful during the process, but it did not last long. Overall, it went very well.

I'd never heard about increased pregnancy rates after an HSG. Fingers-crossed. I'd be happy about that!
