Hi everyone! I'm new to babyandbump!! But very excited to get input from other mamas!!

I may have done the dumbest thing to date!! I'm a FTM and 25 weeks pregnant! My dad went ocean fishing this weekend and caught yellowtail tuna. I've always loved when he brought home tuna and since this was the first fishing trip of the summer I hadn't really put two and two together that I shouldn't eat it. Anyway... He made homemade sushi last night. With the RAW tuna he caught that morning... Raw tuna that hadn't been previously flash frozen like in a sushi restaurant. I ate 3 pieces before I realized what a potentially awful thing I had done. When I realized it he went back to the tuna and confirmed that there were NO visible parasites... And from my online research (all night since I was so worried) I found that tuna is the only fish that isn't actually required to be frozen before consumption because it is very unlikely to have any parasites...
But along with my "research" I saw awful awful words such as... Toxoplasmosis and giardiasis.... Now im even more scared than I was to begin with.

I feel fine... And everyone else in the family who ate sushi last night feels fine too. I guess I just wonder what I should look out for... If I ate it 14+ hours ago would I already feel sick? I can't imagine how I could survive if this accident hurts my little man... I will be devistated.

You've only had 3 pieces, so that's good news. I think if you were going to have food poisoning you'd feel the effects within 24 hours however I've always got sick within about 6-12 hours of eating something bad. Also, giardia takes about 5-7 days to show symptoms after eating it, but I honestly don't think that's going to happen. It's super rare, people eat raw tuna all the time when not pregnant and don't get sick, you're not more likely to be affected by parasites just because you're pregnant :)

It's so easy to blow these things out of proportion when pregnant, I would just carry on as normal, if you feel unwell go and see your GP, but I'm sure you'll be fine!

I eat a LOT of sushi, tuna included when pregnat, and I alwayse think of it like this. Expecting mommys in Japan/china and many other places eat this as a regular part of their diet, and have happy, healthy babys. I think your fine, and stay away from DR google, you will just stress yourself

The risk of these things is tiny so you'd be very unlucky to get ill and even if your did the risk to baby is small. You'd most likely be sick by now if you were going to.

Thats okay, one of my favorite things in the word is caesar dressing and apparently it has raw eggs in it which is a big no no. The ranch dipping sauce I was using the other day also had raw eggs in it.. oops

Fish, my favorite subject love it in all forms and studied them! First off I am very jealous of your tasty treat! That's my favorite raw fish! :)

I wouldn't stress to much about toxins. Unless it was swimming in a toxic pool of water you should be fine. Yes mercury and other toxins build up in larger fish, however you'd have to eat a pound or more in less than a week to even start building it up, even then it may or may not be an issue depending on the fish and where it's food has been. Tunas one you probably don't want to be eating a pound of it but a few bits of it in sushi should be fine, I wouldn't worry.

I eat a ton of fish (cooked right now, but still) though I go lower on the food chain as there is less toxins built up and my babies are good. I eat way over 12oz in a week easy.

Honestly that fish your dad got is fresh and way better than eating raw fish from a restaurant, a few pieces shouldn't hurt anything, it's rare that it would. If it was bad you'd have the runs by now.

If I catch a fish I know is good raw I have no issues eating a bit of it on the spot, the chances of a parasite is not high and you can typically tell if it has worms, parasites or something funky. Its all about knowing your fish and where it came from. Just don't eat barracuda or a puffer while preggers and with large game fish eat it in small portions :)

"Even though the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still recommends not eating sushi while pregnant, there is no scientific evidence linking pregnant women eating sushi with health risks to babies or complications with pregnancies. In fact, Dr. Amos Grunebaum, Director of Obstetrics and Chief of Labor & Delivery at Cornell Medical center says it’s totally fine. And in Japan (where they should know a thing or two about sushi), eating raw fish is considered part of good neonatal nutrition as long as the fish isn’t high in mercury levels (salmon is a safe pick!)."

That tuna was super fresh!! I am sure you'll be fine :-)

It's fine :) You ate all of this stuff before you were pregnant, and probably never got sick; you would have to get extremely unlucky to get a serious food borne illness in a developed country. Fresh fish is...well....fresh. Even caesar dressing isn't typically made with raw eggs when sold commercially, and everything is pasteurized now.
