hi girls, im a total idiot when it comes to formula feeding, i was desparate to BF but it just didnt work, Ollie couldnt latch on n he was starving. Anyway the MW told me to give him 3 ounces on demand...he's such a good wee thing n sleeps for 4 hours between feeds but since yesterday 3 ounces just hasnt been enough...i tried for 2 hours to calm himj down yesterday literally nothing worked until i gave him another ounce. The same happened during the night, he took his 3 ounces then after an hour of screaming took another one. OH thinks i should make up 4 ounce bottles n see if he ever takes the whole 4 every second feed but on the formula box it says they should get 4oz at 2 weeks old.... Ollie is 9 days old and was 8 pound 4 when he was born, OH thinks that he's a big boy and so just needs that extra ounce but im so so scared i'll stretch his little tummy or give him tummy upset. Ive got the MW coming tomorrow n im actually terrified of mentioning it incase she tells me im hurting my Son....can anyone please help?? I dont want my son upset coz he's still hungry but dont wanna damage his little tummy either :( xx

Relax :hugs:

I always worked on the principal that if my LO drained the bottle, I'd make up one that was an ounce bigger next time. She started on 2oz bottles, then moved up to 3oz and so on. That way I could always know that she'd had as much as she wanted, because she'd leave some in the bottle.

I never paid any attention to the age guide on the side of the box. It was never, ever right for my baby's age. The weight one was a bit more in tune, but still had times when it was totally wrong. Those figures are guides only, not rules :)

You won't damage his tummy or cause him any harm by feeding him on demand. Some babies are hungrier than others, and you can't "overfeed" him at this age :) Give him what he'll take, and it'll make both of you happier :hugs:

thanks you so much hun, was worried id damage his little tummy but now thinking about it logically if i was still BF i would have no idea how many ounces he was taking n he'd be fed on demand so why ive got in such a state coz its formula i dunno lol im so nervous of doing the wrong thing! x

I totally agree with Eala. I always make a bottle up which has an oz more than I think she'll drink. I've never paid any attention to the side of the box either as my LO is small for her age and has never taken the amounts they suggest for her age (I agree that the weight is more accurate).

If LO takes in too much they'll bring it back up so don't worry - just enjoy being a mum :hugs:

I agree with the other ladies. Colin takes at least 3 ozs at each feed and feeds pretty much on demand. Sometimes he takes 4 ozs it's not always the same. I say if he's still hungry after 3 ozs give him more. Colin has been taking 4 ozs for almost a week now and he's just over 2 weeks.
