Here's the pattern I use. When I cut it out I ironed some heavy duty interfacing on it and I just keep it up in a clip hanging on a nail by my cutting table. I can't count how many times I've made burp rags with it and it makes a much appreciated gift (pretty yet practical). It's especially great when you're short on time but want to bring something handmade. Fun!

Fish in a Jar
MADE FROM A BABY FOOD JAR !!!!

- Paint one half of the jar blue so that if you were looking at the front of the jar all you would see is the blue from the other side. Cut out a fish shape and decorate as you wish. Then poke a hole in the top of the lid and through the back of the top of the fish. Put a piece of fishing line through the fish and back up to the lid. Make sure it isn't touching the bottom of the jar. Tape the line to the top and you have an adorable fish in a jar

175g margarine
175g sugar
3x eggs
125g self raising flour
50g cocoa powder
100g margarine
175g icing sugar
1x heaped tablespoon cocoa powder
1x tablespoon milk
Currants, angellica, marshmellows, chocolate buttons
Top Tips

You can make smaller tortoises using sponge fairy cakes for the body, broken up chocolate buttons for the feet and half a marshmallow for the head.

Step 1
In a bowl, mix together 175 grams of margarine and 175 grams of sugar. Next, break three eggs into the bowl and beat it all up really well. Finally add 125 grams of self raising flour and 50 grams of cocoa powder. It's a good idea to sieve these to get rid of any lumps. Use a metal spoon to stir it all together, then transfer it to a greased bowl. The bowl needs to be oven-proof and about 16cm in diameter. Put the cake in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees for about an hour.

Step 2
When it's cooked loosen the cake with a knife and carefully turn it out onto a wire rack, then leave it to cool. While it's cooling you can prepare the chocolate butter icing.

In a clean bowl add 100 grams of margarine, 175 grams of sieved icing sugar, 1x heaped tablespoon of cocoa powder and one tablespoon of milk. Mix it together until it's really smooth.

Step 3
Using a knife cut the cake in half, and sandwich the two flat sides together with the butter icing. Cover the whole thing in the rest of the icing - don't forget to save a bit of the icing for the head and legs though.

Once it's all covered, smooth it down with a flat knife. You could use chocolate buttons all over the icing, but you can always use a knife to mark the tortoise's shell lines with a criss-cross pattern.

Step 4
For the legs cover four marshmallows in chocolate butter icing and stick them to the sides of his shell.

For the head stick two marshmallows together and again cover them in chocolate icing.

Finally, stick two currants onto the top of the head for the eyeshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/thingstodo/bakes/tortoisecake_466x262.jpg.jpg

Step 1
Measure out your ingredients and mix them together: 300g of plain flour, 300g of salt and water. Add the water a little at a time and mix until it forms the dough.

Step 2
Put down greaseproof paper and knead the dough.https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage2_306x172.jpg

Step 3
Draw out your template shape on greaseproof paper and cut it out.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage3_306x172.jpg
Step 4
Then roll out the dough evenly onto greaseproof paper until it is about 1.5cm thick. Next put your template on the dough and get an adult to help you cut out the shape.https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage4_306x172.jpg

Step 5
Take a large paper clip, and push it in at the top of your nameplate.

Step 6
Draw and cut out your letter templates on greaseproof paper. Roll out some dough, stick on your template and get an adult to help you cut them out. Take the cut out letters and press them onto your nameplate.https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage6_306x172.jpg

Step 7
Ask an adult to help you place the decorated nameplate in the oven on a low heat (150ºC/Gas Mark 2) and bake for 2.5 hours, or more, until the dough has dried out and hardened. Alternatively, you can leave your dough to dry naturally which takes 1 - 2 days.https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage7_306x172.jpg

Step 8
When your dough has cooled, paint your nameplate. Once the paint is dry you can add a border to your nameplate using a permanent marker pen.https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage8_306x172.jpg

Step 9
For a shiny finish, ask an adult to help you varnish your nameplate using some spray varnish (available at art shops), or cover your nameplate in PVA glue, which will then dry clear!https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/img/c/central/thingstodo/makes/nameplates/stage9_306x172.jpg

Step 10
Hang your finished nameplate on your door!

Weave two 4-inch squares. Fold one in half to form a rectangle. With the same yarn, stitch one short side to create heel. Stitch up nearly half of length to form an opening. Make a running stitch around front opening, then pull to cinch closed; stitch over several times to secure before ending in a knot. With a different yarn, sew a running stitch around top opening, just under scalloped edge; tie ends in a bow. Repeat with second square. When making items for a baby, use soft materials that will be gentle on sensitive skin; we used cashmere and baby-alpaca yarns. Weave six swatches from a 4-inch loom, and sew together in a "T" form. Place a 4-inch foam block on center square, and continue stitching swatches together, enclosing foam.
