If your baby didn't take a dummy, how old when they self settled?

My dd hates her dummy and I know she's still little but I was wondering those who didn't have a dummy, how old were they when you put them in their crib and they went to sleep themselves? She still feeds to sleep and when I put her down its like a stealth operation turning the light off etc and hoping she doesn't wake up!

Mine couldn't take a dummy until about 4 months, but then she did for nighttime sleep. She didn't self settle - as in fall asleep without me in the room - until she was maybe 11-13 months. Dummy or no, we fed her to sleep or laid down with her and held her hand or sat next to her until she was happy to go down sleepy, which I think just happened when it happened because she was old enough. I don't think the dummy made much difference.

My second son didn't like a dummy and he would fall asleep on the bottle most nights but as he got bigger he wouldn't fall completely asleep on the bottle but even when he did I could lie him down right after it and he would just go to sleep he did self settle early tho X

Um, never. :haha: She's nearly 4 and I still lay with her until she falls asleep.

For my older boy it was when he was about 18 months. From 12 mo to 18 months I pat his back to sooth him. Before that, rocked of nursed.

dS2 takes e pacifier occasionally, but most times spits it out before sleeping. I'll definitly be trying to get to self settle sooner that DS1! Just not sure how lol.

Now at 15 months my spouse can put our son down awake and stay with him until he falls asleep, but when I put him to bed he still wants to nurse mostly to sleep before I can put him down.

We never tried to get Violet to self-settle. Babies/toddlers naturally get to a point where nursing doesn't settle them, but Violet has continued to need either cuddles or me to be present when settling at night. For naps, she generally does best when walked in the carrier, but at three, she can occasionally get herself to nap if we have lullabies playing. Leo is 10.5 months and does not self-settle although he was able to do it at a few months old.

My daughter went to bed awake and fell asleep in silence at 7 months....my son mastered it in the last month or so and he is 16 months..neither had a dummy (tho I reckon my son would have loved one..)

Every baby is different and they all need different levels of help in falling asleep for different lengths of time. DD hardly ever took a pacifier. Lying her down awake to fall asleep on her own?? HAHAHA

I night-weaned at 17/18 months to where she would fall asleep with just me lying beside her, but we're still at that stage a year later.

My 6 month old will happily fall asleep in his cot with lullabies and a star projector without a dummy at night times, nap times are still a battle....

I don't think it'll last tho, my eldest was closer to 2 before he was able to fall asleep on his own without any assistance

My daughter never had a dummy either (absolutely hated them) and still won't completely self settle at aged 21 months. However she doesn't need mama anymore and will quite happily fall asleep cuddling daddy as he reads her bedtime stories :) She's very independent in all aspects but just loves a good cuddle to sleep (once transferred to her bed she will sleep all night though) x

My lb doesn't have a dummy and has slept through the night since 8 weeks. I put him in his cot sleepy but awake

Mine was exactly like this. She was also hard to put down at nap time, so often I would just have her nap on me.

She randomly started going down awake but tired for naps and for her night time sleep on her own at 8 months. I don't know what it was - we didn't do any form of sleep training, she just started self settling. It was strange but very welcome haha. Coincidentally this was also the time she started sleeping through (more or less :)) and can do up to 13 hours at times!
